Does headphones harms.

MS , MBBS
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist,
Hi. Head phones definitely will not cause any harm if used with precaution. Ear needs adequate rest from sound as continuous exposure to sound can cause deafness. Always see that you are not exposed to continuous loud sounds.

It may be senile deafness due to ageing. Generally able 50 vision and hearing diminish. If problem is interfering with social life, consult a ent specialist and get hearing test done. Hearing aid might be of great benefit if you have hearing loss beyond 40 db.

Dealing With Hearing Loss

MS - ENT, DNB (ENT)

Dealing With Hearing Loss

Hearing is one of the five senses that you or anyone else relies on for communication and a whole host of other things. Among the five senses, touch, smell, taste, hearing and sight, it is often hearing, which is the most easily affected. You don't have to be a senior citizen to experience hearing loss as it is quite common among younger people as well. This problem is also getting widespread with each passing day.

Before coping with hearing loss, the first job is to detect it
If you have a hunch that you or any of your loved ones is suffering from hearing loss, it is important that you get it diagnosed. Some of the common symptoms of hearing loss will be:

  1. Hearing difficulties while talking to someone over the phone
  2. Straining to hear conversations with family members or friends in household situations
  3. People usually need to repeat what they talk to you with a louder voice
  4. You often hear complaints that you keep the TV too loud.
  5. In crowded situations, such as family gatherings or a restaurant, you have problems listening to people.

Although this condition tends to affect senior citizens, an increasing trend shows younger people i.e. people mostly in their 40 and 50s and even younger than that suffer from this condition.

How to deal with hearing loss?
Some of the options to deal with hearing loss are mentioned below.

  1. Once diagnosed with hearing problems, change your ways of communication: If you or your loved ones have been diagnosed with hearing problems, it is important that both adjust your ways to deal with the problem. Rather than getting angry at the other for not being able to communicate effectively, develop and strategize ways to make communication less problematic and erratic.
  2. Cochlear implants: This is a newer technology, which has gained popularity in the past decade or so. These are directly implanted into the inner ear and are designed to bypass the damaged areas of the ear and directly stimulate the auditory nerve. These have become very popular, although, are not a replacement of natural hearing. It is only prescribed for people who have severe hearing loss or are deaf.
  3. Hearing aids: Although selecting a hearing aid is difficult as the patient needs to be comfortable, once selected it is one of the best solutions for the hearing impaired. The functionality of these devices can be extended with the hearing assistive technology or HAT devices that can focus the audio waves depending on the situations and give a more tailored approach for every individual's needs.

Hearing loss can be conductive and sensorineural, or conductive hearing loss there are options available but sensorineural hearing loss is irreversible. Get a pure tone audiometry done and review with reports to nearby ENT specialist.

My father 50years, is facing the hearing issues. We have to speak multiple times or loudly at tyms when calling from a distance. As per the doctors here, ear machines is the only cure. I wanted to know if there is any alternative? Time no bar. We can spend time in yoga, physio but not looking up for hearing aid.

Unfortunately there is no other cure for sensorineural (hearing nerve related) loss. Yoga and physio have no role to play. Your father needs audiometry followed by hearing aid trial and fitting. He will only grow deafer with time and soon even hearing aids won't help much. Deafness leads to social isolation and dementia over a course of time.

Yes, it can happen because of mild hearing loss. When you don't get enough feedback of you own voice, you tend to increase loudness. Consult an ENT to know the cause of mild hearing loss, if treatable get rid of it.

Hello, if you have decreased hearing and ear discharge for more than 3 months, it's a condition called chronic otitis media. One of the complications of this condition is meningitis, brain abscess if there's erosion of the bony cover between ear and brain. Untreated com it has every chance of occurring. When ear discharge occurs for considerable time the ear bones responsible for hearing gets da, aged and small pockets of infection gets inside these bones. During surgery all affected tissues and bone as far as possible need to be removed. Due to this there's a chance of decrease in hearing postoperative ly. Also as the disease and surgery both has a risk of damaging the nerves, there's little chance of sensorieural damage. But you have to remember the surgery is first done to prevent very serious complications from developing including involvement of brain, facial palsy etc. Hearing reconstruction can be done at the same sitting or as a second stage survey once the ear heals and you are a good candidate for reconstruction. Either treatment or regular followup is very important. The more the delay higher the risk and chances of complicated developing. Have you done a pta, tympanum try, hrct temporal bone. If you share the reports I can help you better. Keep your optimism and all will be on. Hope this helps.
