What Is Trichomoniasis And How Can It Be Prevented?

Trichomoniasis is one of the most commonly occurring sexually transmitted infections. It generally happens on account of having multiple sexual partners or not using condoms and other protective measures during sexual intercourse (vaginal or anal).

Trichomoniasis leads to a foul smelling vaginal discharge and other symptoms that include spotting/bleeding, painful urination, itching in the vaginal region, all of them resulting in painful sexual intercourse. The single- celled protozoa (pathogen) causing this infection is Trichomonas vaginalis.

Symptoms-

The most common symptoms among women are:

  1. vaginal discharge, which can be white, gray, yellow, or green, and usually frothy with an unpleasant smell
  2. vaginal spotting or bleeding
  3. genital burning or itching
  4. genital redness or swelling
  5. frequent urge to urinate
  6. pain during urination or sexual intercourse

The most common symptoms in men are:

  1. discharge from the urethra
  2. burning during urination or after ejaculation
  3. an urge to urinate frequently

Treatment Options for Trichomoniasis-

The treatment options for Trichomoniasis can be categorized as follows:

  1. Antibiotics such as ‘Tinidazole’ or metronidazole can be administered.

  2. It is advisable not to consume alcohol within the first 24 hours of being administered ‘metronidazole’ and the first 72 hours of being administered tinidazole as it can lead to severe vomiting and nausea.

  3. Metronidazole is strictly advised against during pregnancy as it can harm the baby.

How to Prevent Trichomoniasis?

The preventive measures include:

  1. Indulging in safe sex is the best way to prevent Trichomoniasis.

  2. Condoms should be used by both the male and the female partners during a sexual intercourse (anal or vaginal).

  3. Sharing sex toys is another big ‘NO’ as the carriers of various STDs may spread through their common usage.

  4. If a person has already been infected by Trichomoniasis then abstaining from sex is the safest option to prevent it from spreading.

Having a surgery, big or small, will subject your body to a certain degree of pain. Post operative care, hence, is of paramount importance. You'll have a surgical wound where the surgeon makes the incision. To ensure it heals quickly and reduce your chances of an infection, it is important you care for your wound area and keep a regular check for unusual signs and symptoms. 

Let us take a step back to understand the normal process on how a wound heals. At first, there will be inflammation during the first week when blood flow to your wound increases. This is a crucial care period as your wound is still fresh. The second phase is proliferation where new blood vessels and tissue begin to grow around the area. The third and final phase is maturation where new cells develop to strengthen the wound and soften the scar. Depending on the location and size of your wound, your surgeon may have used stitches (medically called sutures), metal clips or staples and adhesive dressings, tapes or glue. Stitches, clips and staples are usually removed between three and 14 days after your treatment.

Here is how you can care for your surgical incision

1.Change your dressing regularly: Most patients are called to the hospital at regular intervals during the first week for a two or three dressing changes. The nurse or doctor ensures a sterile environment during the process. If you find your dressing falling off late night and can't go to the hospital, you can wash your hands thoroughly and open a new sterile dressing package and apply on your wound. At all times, touch only the edges of your old / new dressing.

2.General care for your incision site: Keep the incision site as clean and dry as possible. Keep it covered with plastic during a shower if it is on your hands or legs or take a sponge bath until you get a green signal from your doctor. Protect the incision from sunlight.  Some incisions may get itchy as they heal. This is quite common but it is important not to scratch your incision during this period.

3.Eating and drinking properly to heal quickly:  Vitamin C and protein are important to aid wound healing. Eat a healthy, balanced diet with plenty of variety including lean meat, fish, eggs, dairy, and fruit and vegetables. Make sure that you drink enough water because if you're dehydrated, your wound may take longer to heal.

4.Look for signs of infection: The common signs of an infection are redness, swelling, unusual drainage, warmth around the incision site
increased pain or tenderness at the incision, incision opens up or a fever of more than 100.4 degrees F.

Constipation is the most widely found problem of mankind. Almost the largest number of drugs, are available for the problem and largest sums of money are spent by people to get rid of it. Even then the medical science does not recognise it as a serious disease.

To some extent they are correct. Constipation is not a disease as such. It is merely a condition but it can be responsible for attacks of almost all diseases which are effecting the humans. Unfortunately it is also spreading wildly as the civilization is spreading and eating refined foods is becoming fashionable. Many drugs also cause constipation. If so the prescribing doctor should be immediately contacted for change of the prescription.

The present treatment of the condition is drugs of three different types. A) Lubricating, B) Bulk forming and C) Agitating.

  • Lubricating drugs include various oils, milk of magnesia etc. These drugs lubricate the elementary canal and/or lubricate the faeces and thus facilitate the movement. These are the least damaging type of drugs. Yet they can make even undigested foods to pass through the system or cause diarrhoea.
  • Bulk forming drugs include isabgol, rice bran etc. When the bulk is increased the faeces move and are expelled faster. It should be remembered that these are just substitutes for the fibre which is lost during various processes adopted in kitchens. It is clearly foolishness to first throw away the natural fibre and replace it by purchasing substitutes from the market. Further rejected natural fibre carries away several essential nutrients with them, which are not replaced by the additives.
  • The agitating type drugs include several herbs and chemicals which are not acceptable to the system and therefore the system works extra harder to get rid of them. These ultimately tire out the system and weaken it. The weakened system requires more powerful drugs and the endless race starts. Thus this category causes maximum harm to the digestive system.

It is now obvious that all the above drugs are not the cure for constipation. These have only a one-time effect and can harm the system.

In fact, the cure for constipation lies in lifestyle itself. To get rid of it, one should follow the following advice:

  1. Avoid refined foods.
  2. Eat maximum foods in raw form.
  3. Eat lots of salads and fruits so that there is enough fibre in the food.
  4. Avoid refined flour (Maida), polished rice etc.
  5. Do some regular exercise so that the body, including gut is in good health.
  6. Eat sprouted boiled pulses instead of pulses available in the market.
  7. Do not peel all those vegetables which can be used without peeling. Even if peeling is absolutely necessary do by minimum possible.
  8. Drink sufficient water. (Humans need about 3 litres of water every day).
  9. Try discharge faeces twice a day-Morning and Evening.
  10. Never ignore an urge. Attend to it as early as possible.

Even then sometimes the faeces become dry and hard. In all such cases instead of applying pressure it is better to take a plain water enema (Douche). It is totally harmless, does not form habit, and convenient to take.

It is very important to get rid of constipation. Since constipation is the main cause of several diseases.

Regardless of whether the cause is a tumor, trauma, stroke or any other illness, any injury which inflicts damage on your brain cells is considered to be a brain damage. 

There are two types of brain damage, both of which interfere with the standard functioning of the brain. 
They are:

  1. Acquired brain injury (ABI): Either resulting from a tumor or a neurological illness, for instance a stroke, this type of brain injury originates from the cellular level and is commonly linked with brain pressure.
  2. Traumatic brain injury (TBI): It results from any damage imparted to the skull usually from an external and physical force like a blow to the head or a head accident, which in turn damages the brain.

How severe the brain damage is depends largely on the type of brain injury. Mild brain injuries are temporary, causing headaches, memory lapses, nausea and confusion. On the other hand, severe brain injuries cause cognitive, physical and behavioral impairments which are often life-changing and permanent.

Eczema of the scalp, which results in itching, flaking, or crusting of the scalp, is called scalp peeling or is commonly referred to as “dandruff”. This condition causes increased shedding of normal scalp skin cells. Dandruff may also be caused by a fungal infection, other than just dehydration of the scalp.

The causes of an extremely dry scalp, thereby causing dandruff or even bigger flakes falling from the head onto shoulders and clothes, may be due to scalp psoriasis, eczema, poor nutrition, generalized dehydration, exposure to too much direct heat, and using too much of shampoo.

The three types of dandruff that need to be treated are those resulting from fungal growth, dry scalp and the one resulting from product build-up.

  1. Fungal growth: This kind of dandruff is a chronic condition, caused by increased oil content on the scalp or an off-balance pH of the scalp. It may also be due to poor cleansing habits, or even an allergic reaction to the hair products one uses. Try switching shampoos, conditioners, or styling products to sulfate-free formulas to cure this condition.
  2. Dry scalp: Sometimes, the skin of the scalp is literally so parched and dry that it is flaky and falls away like snakeskin. People with this kind of dandruff usually have drier hair and notice a tightness in their scalp. To treat dry-scalp dandruff, it is wise to indulge one’s hair with moisturizing and hydrating shampoos, cut down on or space out harsh chemical treatments like relaxers, permanents, or dyes, and take in more moisture from the inside - drink at least 8 eight-ounce glasses of water a day, and your skin (including your scalp) will show you results that you want. Eliminating sulfates from your shampoos or other hair care products will also help with dry scalp, since these ingredients help strip away natural oils. Brushing hair or massaging the scalp - either with bare fingertips or a few drops of oil - is another great treatment, since massage helps stimulate circulation and bring blood, nutrients, and oxygen to the scalp and hair.
  3. Product buildup: The most common type of dandruff is due to product buildup. This is what happens when people with otherwise healthy manes and scalps use too many styling products, such as layering gels, hair serum, hairspray, wrap lotions, scalp oils, heat-protecting serum, and so on. Dandruff caused by product buildup usually looks more like small clumps or balls of dirt. It may have a brownish color, since all those products attract and trap plenty of dirt and sweat. Product-buildup dandruff also tends to appear sporadically, only when hair is in need of a wash, whereas other types of dandruff show up more quickly and regularly.

To treat this kind of dandruff, one should wash hair more often or simply aim for using minimum chemical-rich hair products.

Abdominal Laparoscopy is a surgical diagnostic procedure, which is used to examine the organs inside the abdomen. It is an invasive procedure, but only small incisions are made.

Before Surgery

  2. Do not eat or drink anything 8 hours before the procedure
  3. Make sure someone accompanies you on the day of the surgery
  4. Fix your Pre Op appointment to ask any questions or address any concerns regarding the surgery, anaesthesia, etc
  5. Shave the area where the surgery will be performed. This will substantially reduce itchiness
  6. Lastly, prepare your hospital bag and discuss it with the person who is going to accompany you so that he/she knows what all you packed

After Surgery

  1. Don’t lie down in bed all the time. Keep yourself active by moving every two hours as it promotes healing and helps eliminate gas pain
  2. Wear comfortable clothing
  3. Do not take bath for a week. However, you can take a shower 24 hours post surgery
  4. Drink at least 1.5 to 2 litres of water per day to prevent constipation. If constipated, take a stool softener.
  5. While sneezing or coughing, hold a pillow against your stomach to lessen the pain
  6. Roll onto your side and sit up using your arms for support and then stand up
  7. Don’t drive for two weeks
  8. Refrain yourself from intercourse, douching, and swimming
  9. Make sure to visit your doctor 2 to 3 weeks post surgery to make sure your wounds are healing

It might take some time for the wounds to heal, but in case of any prolonged pain do remember to consult your doctor immediately.
