Radiation Therapy In Cancer - Myths And Facts!

Radiation Therapy In Cancer - Myths And Facts!

What is Radiation Therapy?

These are high energy Xrays used to kill cancer cells. These powerful rays attack the DNA (the chemical inside the cell which contains the genetic information). After the attack, the damaged cells attempt to repair the damage, if the repair is successful, the cell lives, however, if the repair is not successful, the cell dies.

There are mainly two types of radiation therapy - teletherapy and brachytherapy.

Teletherapy - when the radiation is delivered from a distance usually 80-100cm. Brachytherapy - when the radiation is delivered from near the target area. Both have their advantages and disadvantages and they are the weapons which are used depending upon the type of enemy.

The basic objective of radiation therapy or for that matter any treatment is maximum tumor kill and minimum side effects. With advances in technologies, now it is feasible to achieve maximum tumor kill (>95%) and keep side effects to a minimum. It is the latter that dictates the cost of treatment.

How is Radiation Therapy delivered?

Usually, it is a 5-6 weeks course, where the treatment is delivered 5 days/week on an outpatient basis. Each session is of 15-20 minutes.

Commons myths revolving around radiation therapy

  1. Radiation is painful - Scientific Fact - It is a painless procedure, similar to getting a CT scan done. One has to lie down on a couch for 15-20 minutes and rest is taken care of by the machine. The most important requirement is lying still and comfortably so that radiation is delivered accurately to the site desired.
  2. After taking radiation, I will become radioactive and pass on to people near me - Scientific Fact - Radiation does not pass from one person to another. Giving radiation is like splashing water, those nearby will be exposed to radiation at the time of splash, however, radiation does not spread from one person to another. Due to advances now unnecessary exposure is kept to a minimum and there are monitoring devices which record radiation exposure. However, your family members are safe.
  3. Radiation causes cancer - Scientific Fact - Yes, radiation causes cancer, since radiation causes damage to the DNA (called a mutation), however, the risk of developing cancer is slightly higher than normal individuals and the benefit attained through radiation outweighs this risk manifold. Also, it takes usually 10 years for radiation-induced cancer to develop, hence a greater concern while giving radiation to children.
  4. After complete removal, no need for radiation - Scientific Fact - Whether cancer will return or not depends upon multiple factors - extent of surgery (whether completely removed), type of cancer (some cancers are inherently notorious for aggressive behavior), extent of cancer (the ones which have spread are more likely to return even after complete removal). In all the cases where there is a likelihood of return, radiation is necessary for minimizing the chances of return. There are multiple research studies which have validated this.

Cost of radiation therapy-

Depends upon the technique used. Ranges from 50000 to 2 lakhs for the entire radiation therapy. The effect of radiation is the same, be it a 50000 treatment or a 2 lakh treatment, however it is the probability of side effects that vary, with latest advances better sparing of normal organs is possible. However, there are multiple charitable schemes available some governmental and some private schemes which render these expensive treatments affordable. Speak to your doctor for such schemes.

Carbohydrates In Mangos!

Carbohydrates In Mangos!

Sweet and juicy, mangos sure know how to satisfy your taste buds. But you may be avoiding this delicious fruit because you heard that it was high in carbohydrates. Well, compared to other fruits, that's true – mangos are higher in carbs, but not by much and certainly not enough to make you want to avoid the tropical fruit altogether.

A Look at the Carbs One cup of fresh-cut mango has 25 grams of carbohydrates. By comparison, the same serving of sliced peaches has 15 grams and chopped apples 17 grams. If you’re counting carbs for a low-carb diet or watching carbs to manage your blood sugar, the difference may make you think twice. But if you’re following a 2,000-calorie diet, each of these fruits, including the mango, meets less than 10 percent of your daily value for carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are your body’s primary source of energy and should provide most of your calories, especially when from healthy sources like mangos. Sugar Content Like all fruit, most of the carbohydrates in mangos comes from its sugar content. One cup of cut mango has 22 grams of sugar, while the same serving of both the peaches and the apples have only 13 grams. While your body uses the sugar in mangos the same way it uses table sugar, mangos also come with vitamins A and C, potassium, folate and fiber. Table sugar offers none of these nutritional benefits. Fiber Content In addition to sugar, some of the carbs in mangos comes from its fiber content. One cup of cut mango has 3 grams of fiber, which is the same amount in a cup of chopped apples, but more than in a cup of sliced peaches, which has 2 grams of fiber. Depending on your age and gender, you need between 21 to 38 grams of fiber a day. One cup of sweet juicy mango provides 8 to 14 percent of your daily needs.

The fiber in foods like mangos slows down digestion to allow for a gradual release of sugar and aids in hunger control. The fiber in mangos may also help keep you regular.

Serving Suggestions- Mangos taste great all by themselves, but you can use them to add sweetness to plain yogurt or unsweetened cereal so you don’t have to add extra sugar. The slightly tart tropical fruit also pairs well with mixed greens and is delicious made into a salsa with diced red onions to use on grilled chicken or fish. You can also add mangos to your smoothie or use them as fruit in your favorite muffin recipe.

Uses Of Activated Charcoal!

Activated charcoal is the byproduct of burning a carbon source like wood or (better yet) coconut shells. The substance is “activated” by high temperatures, removing all the oxygen and changing its chemical structure to create much smaller particles with more surface area.

Activated charcoal is known for its ability to bind to certain poisons, heavy metals, and other toxins and flush them from your body, making it a wonder substance for acute and general detoxification.

Here are some ways activated charcoal can be used in day-to-day life:-

Whitens teeth- It helps to whiten the teeth by changing the pH balance in the mouth and also prevent cavities, bad breath and gum disease. This activated charcoal use is cost-effective and an all-natural solution for a bright smile. For best results, brush your teeth with activated charcoal powder 2–3 times per week.

Helps to prevent hangovers- When activated charcoal is taken at the same time as alcohol, it can significantly reduce blood alcohol concentration.

Water filtration- It helps in the removal of fluoride which is very important for oral health, proper immune system functioning and healthy kidneys and liver.

Digestive Cleanse- It helps to promote a healthy digestive tract by removing toxins that cause allergic reactions and poor immune system function. Eat only organic fruits and vegetables, grass-fed meat and wild fish. Take 10 grams activated charcoal, 90 minutes prior to each meal, for two days.

Anti-aging- It has the potential to be a natural approach to healthy aging. With the reduced toxic load, the body experiences less of the oxidative damage that drives the aging process. This supports better cognitive function. Take two capsules per day after exposure to non-organic foods, heavy meals or after contact with other toxins.

Reduces high cholesterolStudies around the world shows that it helps in reducing the bad cholesterol and increasing the good cholesterol. It also prevents abnormal hardening (sclerosis) in the heart and coronary blood vessels.

Stress & Libido - Can Ayurveda Help?

Stress can take a toll on your health in more ways than one and your sexual health is greatly and adversely impacted by stress. Stress can take a toll on the emotional relationship you share with your partner and also your own physical health, thus resulting in hampered sex life.

Stress and Our Libido:

By now, we know that hormones affect our bodies in numerous ways from childhood to adolescence, pregnancy, menopause and beyond. Cortisol is one of the hormones produced by stress, and you might have heard of it if you’ve ever seen those late night diet pill commercials with the image of the pixelated woman gaining weight in her abdomen. Our bodies need this hormone, but in small doses for short bursts of time. If elevated levels of Cortisol are being produced for a prolonged period of time, they suppress our sex hormones. The lower quantity of sex hormones equals lower libido.

Impact of Stress on Sex-

  1. Stress takes a toll on libido.
  2. Low levels of libido imply lesser secretion of sex hormones, thus, affecting your sex life.
  3. Stress can interfere with your fertility, ovulation and sperm count.
  4. Stress can cause a shift in the hormones. In women, the change in hormones manifests in the form of an irregular ovulatory cycle.
  5. Loss of intimacy.
  6. Being under stress constantly can lead to anger, emotional outbursts, depression and loss of intimacy with your partner; thus affecting your sexual relations.
  7. Stress also affects your body image negatively, thus leading to unpleasant and bad sex.

How to rejuvenate your sex life?

Ayurvedic medicines help to overcome the stress-related conditions without any side effects. Some herbs proved to be helpful in relieving stress & increasing libido like Ashwagandha,
safed musali, Shatavari, Manaskalp capsule, Ozaup capsule. These are beneficial in all stress-related sexual problems. Other tips are:

  1. Communicate your feelings: Many-a-times, communicating and sharing your feelings, desires and anxiety with your partner might be all that you need to rejuvenate your sex life.
  2. Regular exercise and proper sleep: 20-30 minutes of body work out or a session of yoga every day helps you to de-stress. A proper eight-hour sleep cycle will also go a long way in de-stressing you.
  3. Supplements to boost your libido and energy: Taking multivitamins, minerals, zinc and other supplements helps to boost your energy levels and libido, thus allowing you to enjoy your sex life to the fullest.
  4. Set the mood correctly: Set the right mood before your intimate sessions; with some soothing music, aromatic fragrance and dim lights. This can and will enhance your sex life by promoting relaxation, happiness and overall emotional well being.

Thyroid - How To Tackle It In Pregnancy?

Thyroid - How To Tackle It In Pregnancy?

The body has various chemicals called hormones which play a significant role in controlling various functions. Produced by organs that weigh as less as 0.5 g, these hormones control height to weight to reproduction to metabolism. It is not surprising that even little amount of variation in these hormones has a noticeable effect on the body’s functioning.

It is well acknowledged that pregnancy is a highly crucial, complicated, and anxious period of a woman’s life. The mother-to-be has the dual responsibility of taking care of her health in addition to ensuring the child within is protected and nurtured well to develop into a full-term baby. Pregnancy is controlled by many hormones and the thyroid also plays a significant role during this time. The connection between pregnancy and thyroid hormone is quite strong.

Women are more prone to develop hypothyroidism, and if diagnosed during pregnancy, extra care must be taken to ensure thyroid levels are maintained in the optimal range. Women with hypothyroidism who get pregnant can have multiple effects including the following

  1. Higher incidence of miscarriages: When a woman has multiple miscarriages in the first trimester, one of the reasons to rule out would be hypothyroidism. The incidence of second-trimester miscarriage is also quite high in women with hypothyroidism. It is believed that thyroid controls the other female hormone levels and therefore optimal levels of T4 are essential for maintenance of pregnancy.
  2. Developmental defects and delays: The developing child requires its supply of hormones from the mother until it can start producing them on its own. This would take time and unless the mother is producing optimal amounts for herself, the child would not be receiving the required amounts of hormones. This means the child’s growth and development controlled by the hormones would be affected. Even after birth, there could be delays in terms of developmental milestones.
  3. Low birth weight: Underdevelopment of the child leads to low birth weight.
  4. Stillbirth: Women with hypothyroidism can also have a higher incidence of stillbirth.
  5. Hypertension and preeclampsia: The blood pressure could be significantly elevated and lead to complications in the later trimesters.
  6. Maternal emotional health: Lower levels of thyroid bring about fatigue, depression and mood swings in all women. Given the added state of pregnancy, it is not surprising there would be greater mood swings and bouts of depression and low self-esteem.

With prenatal care improving, comprehensive thyroid screening, especially in people with a family history of thyroid problems, is being made mandatory. Talk to your doctor to ensure your thyroid functions are normal. This ensures thyroid levels are maintained for optimal growth of the newborn and the health of the mother is not jeopardised.

Smoking & Drinking - How Lethal Is It While Your Pregnant?

Smoking & Drinking - How Lethal Is It While Your Pregnant?

Pregnancy is a time when you have to be at your vigilant best even as you go about your normal life. If you happen to be a smoker and enjoy a drink once in a while, then it may be time to change these habits. Ideally, one should let go of these habits as soon as the couple starts trying for a baby, as to how you treat your body in the preconception stage will have a great bearing on how your body adjusts to pregnancy and the aftermath of childbirth. Let us find out the dangers of smoking and drinking during pregnancy.

  1. Alcohol and Your Baby: While you may be thinking that a drink or two of wine in a week may not do any harm to your foetus, this is actually a misnomer. One should steer clear of even a sip as the alcohol usually ends up passing through your placenta and right into your growing foetus.
  2. Alcohol Break Down: When the alcohol gets passed through your system and into the baby, there is a definite health hazard to the foetus. This is due to the fact that the body tends to break down alcohol in a much slower manner, than it would break down any other food or beverage. And the risk is that much more heightened in case of the growing foetus, because the tiny bodies are not equipped to handle the breaking down process properly. This may lead to a rise of the blood alcohol level of the foetus, keeping it at that level even after the mother's blood alcohol level has been restored to normal.
  3. Retardation and Other Related Ailments: When the blood alcohol level of the baby remains high, it can lead to a variety of problems that can go from mild to severe. Retardation, heart ailments and more can be born from this issue. Also, this can lead to deformed facial features as well as behavioural problems like aggression.
  4. Smoking and Low Birth Weight: When you smoke during your pregnancy, it doubles your risk of birthing a baby whose weight is significantly lower than the acceptable standard and what is considered normal.
  5. Smoking and Other Complications: Also, smoking during pregnancy increases the chances of having an ectopic pregnancy, which can lead to the loss of the foetus. Further, you can also end up having a premature baby, if you smoke during pregnancy, as this will lead to the burst of your water before the actual labour begins. Finally, smoking during pregnancy can give rise to complications in the placenta, which will result in a separation of the placenta from the uterine wall, much before the delivery actually happens.

Female Condoms - Know Merits & Demerits Of It!

Female Condoms - Know Merits & Demerits Of It!

Female condoms are generally pouches made of latex and polyurethane, which are used by women during sex in order to prevent pregnancy and thereby reduce the chances of infection by sexually transmitted diseases. Each end of these pouches are made of rings that are flexible. They should be inserted deep inside the vagina before sex is initiated and held in the position by utilizing the rings available at the closed end while the rings which are at the open end remain outside the vagina during sex.

Even though it can be safely used by most people, some women would find female condoms to be an inappropriate form of contraception and would not feel comfortable with their genital areas being touched. Thus, it is very important that the appropriate form of contraception be considered for you and your partner. Condoms should be used correctly. In case of need for extra protection, other options of contraception should be considered.

Pros of female condoms:

  1. Since the exchange of bodily fluids, such as semen and vaginal fluid is prevented, female condoms aid in offering protection against many sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV.
  2. Condoms can prove to be reliable pregnancy averting methods if they are properly and consistently used.
  3. Female condoms are only needed during the time of sex. Any form of advance preparation is not required, hence making them suitable for unplanned sex.
  4. Prescriptions are not needed
  5. The condoms are usually small in size, disposable as well as easy to carry
  6. Usually, using condoms does not show any medical side effects.
  7. Insertion of female condoms can be done up to a duration of eight hours before sex. The responsibility for utilizing condoms properly should be shared by the woman as well as the partner.

Cons of female condoms:

  1. Even though condoms are generally very strong, they are prone to splitting or tearing in case of improper use.
  2. Availability of female condoms pales in comparison to the male counterparts and they are usually more expensive.
  3. The outer ring might produce a cumbersome feeling.
