Shortness of breath or dyspnea is a worrisome condition. It can be acute or chronic and could be due to a variety of causes. In most cases, shortness of breath that is acute is a temporary thing that may occur after a severely exhaustive physical activity. Chronic shortness of breath may indicate an underlying illness that may require medical intervention. Pain attack, anxiety, infection in the lung or heart problems are common causes of shortness of breath.
HOW IS SHORTNESS OF BREATH DIAGNOSED?
A general physician may conduct a physical examination to identify underlying health conditions. Evaluating medical history is essential along with imaging tests such as CT scan and MRI that may indicate a blockage in the lungs. If the patient has a history of cardiovascular disease, an immediate ECG may be performed.
HOW IS SHORTNESS OF BREATH TREATED?
Treatment again depends on the diagnosis. In case of lung infections, antibiotics and recommended measures are undertaken. If the patient has respiratory issues like asthma then relevant support devices along with medications are started.
