A problem of the eye is called Retinal Detachment where the retina tends to get detached from the layer underneath the same. In such conditions the patient would experience the problem of floater followed with flashes of light and in other cases there is a kind of a curtain coming over the eye thus blocking the vision. Both eyes or even a single eye can get affected.
HOW IS RETINAL DETACHMENT DIAGNOSED?
Retinal detachment is diagnosed by retinal examination in which opthalmologist may use an ophthalmoscope to examine the back of the eye and the retina to see any retinal holes, tears or detachments. An ultrasound imaging is done to check for bleeding in the eye.
HOW IS RETINAL DETACHMENT TREATED?
A procedure using a laser or cryopexy could be used to repair the tear in the retina. Pneumatic retinopexy is another procedure to repair retinal tears if they are small. In some cases where the retinal tears are large then surgery which would involve procedures such as a vitrectomy or the use of a scleral buckle would be performed.
