In this disorder, the muscles that are used for various kinds of movements and motions get severely affected. This may begin during one’s childhood and gradually progress to a stage where bouts of muscle tensing may be experienced. These bouts are known as myotonia. This causes muscle stiffness.

Mexiletine has been found to be successful for treatment for muscle stiffness while some have found acetazolamide to be helpful as well. Avoidance of myotonia triggering events is also effective method of myotonia prevention.
