If a child is constantly angry, irritable, defiant and vindictive towards authority figures then they could be having oppositional defiant disorder. Most children with this disorder would also be argumentative and throw temper tantrums. This behaviour usually develops before teenage years.
HOW IS OPPOSITIONAL DEFIANT DISORDER DIAGNOSED?
The diagnosis will be done by a psychologist or even a paediatrician who can refer the parents to one. The diagnosis is usually done on the basis of the symptoms as well as an evaluation with the help of discussions with the child and the parent.
HOW IS OPPOSITIONAL DEFIANT DISORDER TREATED?
Treatment of ODD consists of therapy to help manage behaviour. No medications are prescribed for this disorder unless it appears with other conditions such as attention deficient hyperactive disorder.
