Neck Pain is pain or discomfort associated with the neck and shoulders to an extent. The neck is made up of vertebrae that extend from the skull to upper torso. Motion in the neck is brought about by bones, ligaments and muscles of the neck. Abnormalities, inflammation and injuries cause neck pain. Symptoms of neck pain are:
• Stiffness of neck
• Limited motion of neck muscles
• Pain and swelling sometimes
• Sharp or shooting pain during movement
HOW IS NECK PAIN DIAGNOSED?
The health care provider will do a physical examination and ask for details of symptoms along with medical history. The doctor may suggest tests that include:
• blood tests
• CT scans
• MRI scans
• a lumbar puncture, or a spinal tap
HOW IS NECK PAIN TREATED?
Treatment is based on the diagnosis. The doctor may prescribe heat therapy, physical exercise, pain medication, corticosteroids, muscle relaxants, a neck collar and other such treatments based on the specific case or condition. Antibiotics may be prescribed if there is an infection causing the pain.
