Muscle Spasm may affect different types of muscles, leading to different type of symptoms. Muscle spasms cause extreme discomfort and pain. Muscle spasm is caused by a sudden involuntary contraction of the muscle or a group of muscles. Symptoms are:
• Sudden burst of pain
• Shooting pain
HOW IS MUSCLE SPASM DIAGNOSED?
The doctor will perform a physical examination and ask for details of medical history along with symptoms. They may order:
• blood tests to evaluate electrolyte levels and thyroid function
• an MRI scan
• a CT scan
• electromyography to assess the health of the muscles and the nerve cells that control them
HOW IS MUSCLE SPASM TREATED?
Mostly these spasms are short-lived. A gentle stretch of the muscle may relieve the spasm. Further treatment may be needed in some cases and that depends on the underlying cause.
