Merkel Cell Carcinoma is also known as neuroendocrine carcinoma and is a rare type of cancer of the skin. A nodule which is the colour of the skin or red, blue or purple in colour appearing on the face, head or neck is a characteristic symptom of this disorder. This tumour would be painless but fast growing.
HOW IS MERKEL CELL CARCINOMA DIAGNOSED?
An oncology specialist can diagnose the condition when referred by a dermatologist on physician examination. A skin biopsy will be needed for definitive diagnosis. Imaging scans and PET scan may also be recommended.
HOW IS MERKEL CELL CARCINOMA TREATED?
The tumour along with a border of normal skin is removed through surgery. After removing the cancer, radiation therapy and chemotherapy may be performed to kill any remaining cancer cells.
