Insomnia in Children is not something that is uncommon and usually happens because of disrupted sleeping patterns, poor diet and lifestyle habits and more importantly lack of routine. In this condition children to remain awake late in the night or have trouble falling asleep. They may also wake up a number of times in the night. Sleep anxiety may follow suit.

Diagnosis of Insomnia in Children depends on the symptoms and evaluation of the sleep pattern. Paediatricians may order for an overnight sleep study for detailed observation of sleep pattern in children. Problems like obstructive sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome or other problems can be diagnosed by sleep study
HOW IS INSOMNIA IN CHILDREN TREATED?
Treatments include eliminating sweet items from their meals post evening to decrease energy levels. Regular nap time, bed time, bathing before bad and very mild sedatives can also be prescribed. Counselling is given to children who have nightmares along with insomnia. Bedtime stories and calm music are suggested too.
