Hypersomnia is a medical condition which is characterized by excessive sleepiness. People with Hypersomnia have trouble staying awake during the day. These people fall asleep at anytime, for example while working, driving or eating. Symptoms are:
• Excessive sleepiness during day
• Loss of appetite
• Slow speech
• Memory problems
HOW IS HYPERSOMNIA DIAGNOSED?
The primary cause of Hypersomnia is due to a problem in the brain system that controls sleep and waking functions. A Somnologist/General Physician/Ayurvedic Doctor diagnoses Hypersomnia by conducting a physical test to check for its symptoms. Also, the doctor can recommend Polysomnogram, or multiple sleep latency tests to diagnose Hypersomnia.
HOW IS HYPERSOMNIA TREATED?
While narcolepsy drugs and other medication can treat Hypersomnia, but following a regular sleep pattern is the best way to treat this disease.
DID YOU KNOW?
This condition is similar to narcolepsy in that you are extremely sleepy. It is different from narcolepsy because idiopathic hypersomnia does not usually involve suddenly falling asleep (sleep attacks) or losing muscle control due to strong emotions (cataplexy). Also, unlike narcolepsy, naps in idiopathic hypersomnia are usually not refreshing.
