Follow up after surgery is important for avoiding recurrence of Hydrocele Hernia
Hydrocele and Hernia
Hydrocele is the gathered fluid in the sack of skin that is loose around the testes. This fluid flows down from other body fluids and gets stored in the sack of skin that is around the testes. This sack of the skin runs through the spermatic cord in the form of a tube and its mouth opens in the abdomen. Usually this opening closes naturally in the first postnatal life of a child. When the opening does not close by itself, the flowing of liquid into it continues resulting in making the sack larger in size. The condition becomes life-threatening when intestine gets trapped in the pouch of skin and blood supply to the particular organ is cut off. The name of this condition is hernia. The risk of hernia continues when the pouch becomes larger and remains open.
What are the Symptoms?
Though there are no stipulated symptoms of hydrocele or hernia but one may come to know it if there is a swelling in the pouch of skin containing the testes (scrotum). If the swelling enlarges and becomes smaller in size it indicated that there is a free flow of liquid into the pouch. In male child, symptoms can also include heaviness around the base of penis. Though hernia is common among boys, girls can also get it. Swelling in the labia (outside the vagina) suggests hernia.
Inguinal hernia takes place when a part of the intestine slips into the scrotum forming a lump there. Inguinal hernia can be classified into two types, Direct Inguinal Hernia and Indirect Inguinal Hernia. Direct Inguinal Hernia is common in adult males whereas the rate of Indirect Inguinal Hernia is more common in premature infants. Male children are more likely to have hydrocele and inguinal hernia, but female children are likely to get only hernia.
Treatment for hydrocele
There are two ways for treating hydrocele: Surgery and Aspiration (removing the fluid with a needle). Aspiration is suggested when a patient is old and is unable to undergo surgery due to the risk of infection. It has been observed that hydrocele often reoccurs after aspiration, surgery is needed in such cases. Hydrocele is a condition that gets cured naturally, in about a year or so, but if it is not cured within the stipulated timeframe, one has to consult a doctor.
Can hydrocele be prevented?
There are no ways to prevent hydrocele in male infants. Hydrocele cannot be prevented as the exact cause of the ailment is not known. So the best thing would be to observe the child carefully for one year. However, it can be prevented in adult males by taking protective measures against injuries. Hydrocele in adult males is caused due to strain or physical injury to the scrotum. In such instances hydrocele can be prevented by keeping the scrotum protected from injury.
How to take care after surgery?
It becomes even more important to take care of yourself after the surgery. It is recommended to avoid tiring activities like riding a bike for the next three weeks. A doctor may give medication to relieve one from the surgery pain. One can prevent infection by taking sponge baths.
