Herpes Infections or herpes simplex infections are infections caused by the herpes virus. The herpes virus can appear in any part of the body. It most commonly appears in the mouth (HSV-1 or oral herpes) and genitals (HSV-2). Symptoms are:
• Blistering sores in mouth and genitals
• Pain during urination
• Flu like symptoms
• Swollen lymph nodes
• Lack of appetite
HOW IS HERPES INFECTIONS DIAGNOSED?
Herpes infection is usually easy for doctors to recognize. If unsure, doctors may use a swab to take a sample of material from the store and send the swab to a laboratory to grow (culture) and identify the virus. If a brain infection is suspected, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain and a spinal tap to get a sample of cerebrospinal fluid may be done.
HOW IS HERPES INFECTIONS TREATED?
The treatment for Herpes Infections is aimed more towards reducing the pain and lessening the impact of the sores since complete cure for the infection is still not found. Oral medication will be given to reduce the pain experienced and to speed the curing of infection.
