Hepatic Encephalopathy is a disorder in the functioning of the brain that occurs as a result of severe liver disease. As a result, the liver is unable to adequately break down toxins from the blood and this causes a buildup of toxins which can lead to brain damage. However, it is always recommended to visit a Gastroenterologist/General Physician and undergo a body check up if a person is undergoing symptoms such as difficulty in thinking, personality changes, poor concentration, forgetfulness, and breath odour.
HOW IS HEPATIC ENCEPHALOPATHY DIAGNOSED?
The basic cause of this condition, as mentioned, is the failure of the liver to discharge some of its fluids, so the Gastroenterologist will first focus on knowing the condition of the liver and will want to know if the patient or those around him/her have noticed the changes in the behaviour. A blood test can give some indication.
HOW IS HEPATIC ENCEPHALOPATHY TREATED?
The treatment for Hepatic encephalopathy will be approached based purely on the diagnosis of the individual and the severity of the condition. The objective of the treatment will be to rid the body of some of the toxins which hinder the functioning of the liver. Some antibiotics can also be prescribed to control the situation. A series of steps in controlling the diet and food intake will also help.
