Hamstring strain or hamstring injury occurs when the hamstring muscle is pulled or strained. There are three hamstring muscles that run along the back of your thigh. Sports people are more susceptible to hamstring strain. Symptoms are:
• Sudden sharp pain at the back of the thigh
• Popping or tearing sensation
• Swelling and tenderness
• Bruising or discoloration
• Muscle weakness
• Inability to put weight on affected leg
HOW IS HAMSTRING STRAIN DIAGNOSED?
Diagnosis of the same is done by a general physician who would examine your hamstring and leg area. He/ she could then ask for an X-ray to check if there is any tear in the ligament too.
HOW IS HAMSTRING STRAIN TREATED?
Treatment for the same includes intensive physiotherapy followed with special massage techniques. Along with this, you may have restrictions on certain activities and physical exercises would be provided too. Medicines to relieve the pain, including external anti-inflammatory medicines may also be given.
