Eye itching is a condition in which a person feels the urge to rub eyes from time to time for relief from itching. Eye itching is usually accompanied by itchy eyelids or red eyes. Pruritus is the medical name given to itching eyes. Most of the times itchy eyes are caused by an eye allergy or due to presence of foreign body in the eye. Symptoms are: urge to rub eyes to get rid of foreign bodies, red or swollen eyes, watery discharge from eyes, excessive tearing and dry eyes.
HOW IS EYE ITCHING DIAGNOSED?
The eye specialist may examine the affected eye to determine if the patient is suffering from allergic conjunctivitis. The doctor will ask questions about the specific symptoms, medical history, diet, and lifestyle. To diagnose specific allergies, one or more of the following tests may be performed:
• Allergy skin test
• Blood test for allergies
• Food allergy test
• Physical examination
HOW IS EYE ITCHING TREATED?
In most of the cases, any form of Eye Itching is treated by giving eye drops, creams or antibiotics but a milder form of itching can be easily treated at home.
