This is one of the diseases that falls under the group of COPD or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It ends up damaging the air sacs that are also known as alveoli and leaves the patient feeling choked and breathless. If the fingernails turn grey or blue and you have trouble climbing stairs due to shortness of breath, then you may have Emphysema.
HOW IS EMPHYSEMA DIAGNOSED?
The general physician would ask you to go for certain tests if you are experience extreme shortness of breath in everyday activities like climbing stairs. These include ultrasound of the lungs and other forms of scanning. X-rays and lab tests may be done too.
HOW IS EMPHYSEMA TREATED?
Treatment involves bronchodilating medications along with steroids and antibiotics. Oxygen supply may be arranged for in severe cases. Lung volume reduction surgery and lung transplant may be needed in certain cases.
