When the pancreas are not able to produce the required levels of insulin, the diabetes may manifest in the child as this malfunction usually leads to an increase in the blood sugar levels. This happens because the blood then starts to absorb the glucose from the food that the child ingests. Also, being overweight and other hormonal problems can lead to diabetes.

Blood tests are used to diagnose diabetes. When children show the above symptoms, paediatrics doctors may recommend A1C test and oral glucose tolerance test to check for diabetes.

There is no cure for diabetes. Medications and insulin is given to keep the blood sugar levels under normal range. Children with type 1 diabetes will need to take insulin whereas children with type 2 diabetes can control their condition with diet and exercise.
