This is a debilitating condition that leaves the patient feeling constantly tired and exhausted. The feeling of fatigue does not allow the patient to indulge in normal day to day functioning. It may be caused due to low blood pressure, or a weak immunity system. The symptoms include persistent drowsiness, lack of concentration, memory impairment and pain in the muscles.
HOW IS CHRONIC FATIGUE DIAGNOSED?
A general physician diagnoses this condition though it is very difficult. There are no lab tests to screen chronic fatigue and its symptoms are common to many illnesses. In order to be diagnosed with this condition, you must have at least four of the above symptoms listed. Also, there must be severe unexplained fatigue that cannot be cured with bed rest. The fatigue and other symptoms must last for six months or longer
HOW IS CHRONIC FATIGUE TREATED?
The treatment is based on the various symptoms and causes of the syndrome. The doctor may prescribe medicines like anti-depressants or sleeping pills. Physical Therapy and psychological counselling may be helpful in many cases.
