Carbuncles are red, painful cluster of boils that are connected to each other under the skin. Most carbuncles are caused by Staphylococcus aureus bacteria that inhabit the skin, throat and nasal passages. This condition may cause permanent scarring. Symptoms are:
• Red, inflamed lump under the skin
• Painful upon touching
• Filled with pus
• Itching before the appearance of lump
• Body aches
• Crustiness or oozing of skin
HOW IS CARBUNCLES DIAGNOSED?
The diagnosis is done by a dermatologist who will examine the affected area and identify the problem. A sample of the pus may be sent to a lab to determine the bacteria causing the infection (bacterial culture).
HOW IS CARBUNCLES TREATED?
The doctor will prescribe antibiotics and pain relievers to help in treating the condition. Also, anti bacterial soaps will be required on a regular basis to replace normal soaps. Particularly large Carbuncles may require surgery.
