Bulimia is an eating disorder that is characterised by binge eating followed by purging or vomiting. It is also known as Bulimia Nervosa, which is a psychological disorder. It can also lead to the use of excessive diuretics, laxatives and too many sessions of exercise.
HOW IS BULIMIA DIAGNOSED?
General physicians who will diagnose the condition with a proper history and clinical examination will refer the patient to a psychiatrist. The important facts in the history include the main symptoms patients hide often, eating patterns and signs which other people notice. These signs include, visiting the bathroom following every meal, being secretive about eating and avoid eating when other people are around, excessive exercises even when they are not fit enough or sick, frequent conversations about body shape and diet, usage of laxatives and diuretics and teeth marks or hardenings ( callus) on back of the hands, swollen cheeks and jaws due to frequent vomiting. A mental health assessment will also be carried out to assess anxiety and depression. Blood tests to assess electrolyte imbalances and malnutrition and X-rays which may show weakened bones will also help in making a diagnosis and find complications.
HOW IS BULIMIA TREATED?
There are two main types of treatment given to those suffering from bulimia: psychopharmacological and psychological treatments.Medications of antidepressants are used. Alternative medicines such as hypnotherapy has shown positive results.
