Breast infection, also referred to as mastitis, is a bacterial infection that occurs within the tissues of the breast. Such infections are common among ladies who are breast feeding. Common symptoms are:
• Abnormal swelling and tenderness of breast
• Pain or burning sensation in the breast
• Warm breast
• High grade fever and chills
• Pus filled nipple discharge
• Enlarged lymph nodes in armpits or neck
HOW IS BREAST INFECTION DIAGNOSED?
In a breastfeeding woman, diagnosis of mastitis is based on a physical examination and a review of symptoms. In other cases, testing includes mammogram, breast MRI, and breast biopsy.
HOW IS BREAST INFECTION TREATED?
Usually, the gynaecologist will prescribe antibiotics for mild infections. For more severe cases, a clinical procedure for lancing and draining an abscess may be required. Warm compresses and anti inflammatory medication can also give relief.
