Birth defects are problems that happen when the baby is developing in the mother’s womb. Most of the birth defects happen during the first 3 months of pregnancy. They are structural or functional abnormalities that cause physical or mental disability. They are the leading cause of death for infants during the first year of life or during birth. They may be caused by genetic problems, problems with chromosomes, or environmental factors.

A gynaecologist diagnoses birth defects during pregnancy by an ultrasound scan. A paediatrician diagnosed after birth through physical examination. Specific tests are used after birth to diagnose each kind of birth defect
HOW IS BIRTH DEFECTS TREATED?
Treatment of birth defects is not possible while the baby is in the womb. Some preventive steps can be taken by the mother, such as, taking vaccinations, prenatal vitamins, ensure that they don't have STDs and avoid unnecessary medication. Taking a healthy diet and doing regular exercise can also help prevent birth defects.
