Bad breath is characterized by an unpleasant odor of the mouth. The bacteria that settle on the teeth can produce unpleasant smelling gases which cause bad breath, gum diseases and tooth decay. The common causes of bad breath are food, tobacco products, poor dental hygiene, health problems, dry mouth, mouth infections, dental problems, or medications.

Treatment of bad breath depends on the underlying cause. If the cause is bad oral hygiene then steps need to be taken to maintain good oral hygiene by using toothpastes and oral rinses. If there is a dental disease causing bad breath, then it needs to be treated. If bad breath is due to dry mouth then drinking plenty of water helps eliminate the odor.
