Amoebiasis is a parasitic infection of the intestines caused by any of the amoebas. The symptoms of Amoebiasis are abdominal cramping, diarrhea, loose stools, blood in stools, severe colitis with tissue death and perforation. The severe symptoms may cause peritonitis. People affected may develop anemia due to loss of blood.
HOW IS AMOEBIASIS DIAGNOSED?
Amoebiasis can be diagnosed by assessing patient’s health history, stool samples and liver tests. In advanced cases, a CT scan and Colonoscopy might be performed.
HOW IS AMOEBIASIS TREATED?
The treatment for Amebiasis includes oral ingestion of pills that contain metronidazole, like Flagyl. In case nausea is being encountered, then the gastroenterologist may also prescribe some nausea fighting drugs.
