It is an infection caused by any of the amoebas of the Entamoeba group. Symptoms are abdominal pain, mild diarrhoea, bloody diarrhea or severe colitis with tissue death and perforation. People affected may develop anemia due to loss of blood.
HOW IS AMOEBIASIS DIAGNOSED?
A trip to the Gastroenterology department will help in diagnosing this condition with the help of blood tests, stool tests and other lab tests. The gastroenterologist may also want to run you through a liver function test to ensure that the infection has not spread much. Very severe cases may also call for a CT Scan.
HOW IS AMOEBIASIS TREATED?
Anti amoebic drugs known as amebicides are used for treating amoebiasis in the intestine and in the tissues of the intestine or liver.
