When the fatty enzymes present in the digestive system do not do the work of breaking up the fats that one absorbs from food, these fats form a build up in the brain and affect the functioning of the protective layer around the nerves, called Myelin. This can lead to seizures and hyperactivity as well as speech and cognitive problems.
HOW IS ADRENOLEUKODYSTROPHY DIAGNOSED?
The diagnosis is done by simple blood test to look for abnormal high levels of VLCFA. Skin samples or biopsy for cell culture for VLCFA and MRI scan are other tests to detect ALD. The causes of ALD could be analyzed by finding the details of genetic mutation.
HOW IS ADRENOLEUKODYSTROPHY TREATED?
There are various kinds of therapy that can be used for treating this condition. These include gene therapy which can be transplanted in case a natural match is not found; transplant which can be done in the early stages. Also dietary therapy is known to be effective in such cases.
