Achondroplasia is a form of short-limbed dwarfism. The word Achondroplasia means ‘without cartilage formation’. Dwarfism is a condition of short figure in an adult. People with Achondroplasia are short in built with normal physique and short limbs. The symptoms are: • Short built which is below average for age and sex. • Short limbs in comparison to body height • Short fingers • Larger head • Occurrence of frequent ear infections, sleep apnea and hydrocephalus.
HOW IS ACHONDROPLASIA DIAGNOSED?
Genetic testing suggested by a general physician can diagnose Achondroplasia in young children while for older people, diagnosing involves clinical and X-ray findings.
HOW IS ACHONDROPLASIA TREATED?
Although there is no cure for this condition, growth hormones can be injected for some amount of development.

People with Achondroplasia generally have normal intelligence levels. It could be inherited by parents. When one parent has Achondroplasia then a child has 50% chance of getting it. A few of the dog breeds have been classified as “achondroplastic"" eg basset hound, dachshund, bull dog, etc.
