About Porphobilinogen - Qualitative Test

The Porphobilinogen (PBG) 24 Hour Urine Test that facilitates in the diagnosis of a category of diseases called Porphyrias. Porphyrias are a series of inherited disorders that affects the skin, nervous system, or both. Porphobilinogen is responsible for the production of porphyrins that facilitates in the production of heme, an essential content of hemoglobin. However if the body is devoid of one or more of these enzymes necessary for this process, the porphobilinogen and porphyrins can build up in the body to hazardous levels. Porphyria can cause several complications like dehydration, high blood pressure, liver or kidney disease, skin damage, and breathing abnormalities. Measuring the levels of PBG excreted in the urine can facilitate the doctor to diagnose and discriminate in between the different types of Porphyria.
