Eardrum surgery or reconstructive middle ear surgery or ear reconstruction is a surgical procedure that is used to treat a hole or a tear in the eardrum or the tympanic membrane. This form of surgical treatment is also used by ENT surgeons to replace or repair any defects that might prevail in any or all of the three tiny bones that comfortably sits behind the eardrum (ossicles). Tympanic membrane or the eardrum is a thin tissue placed in between the outer ear and the middle ear. Damage to any of these organs can only be corrected with eardrum surgery. During the procedure, local anaesthesia is given to patients. The surgeon makes an incision behind the ear or inside the ear canal. Depending on the problem, the surgeon cleans out the infection or the dead tissue in the eardrum or in the middle ear and patches up the eardrum with a piece of tissue taken from the patient's vein or muscle. This form of surgery is known as tympanoplasty, which takes 2-3 hours of time. He removes, replaces or repairs the tiny little bones in the middle ear. This is known as ossiculoplasty, which also takes about 2 hours of time. The holes in the eardrum are repaired by applying a gel-like thing or a medicated special paper over the eardrum. This is known as myringoplasty and it usually takes 10-30 minutes of time. Depending on the extent of damage repaired and the type of surgery, ear reconstruction cost typically ranges from $2,790 to $4,139.
