Risks and Benefits of Testosterone Therapy

Gynaecologist, Chennai
Risks and Benefits of Testosterone Therapy

Low level of testosterone can end up affecting various aspects of a your life. It can affect your libido, your performance in bed along with your motivation and energy. Testosterone replacement therapy can bring the levels back to what they were before and restore his lost confidence, energy and vigour.

Testosterone is a hormone which is mainly produced in the testicles. Testosterone controls bone density, distribution of fat, muscle mass and strength, body and facial hair, red blood cell production, sex drive and production of sperms.

Testosterone levels generally lower with age, especially after 30. Usually, in older men, low levels of testosterone result in androgen deficiency. Androgen deficiency affects the muscle mass, bone density, weight and can drastically change sleep patterns as well. On the other hand, testicle injury, testicular cancer or treatment for it, hormonal disorders, infections, HIV/AIDS, chronic kidney or liver disease, type 2 diabetes and obesity can lead to low testosterone levels as well.

While testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) seems very desirable, there are certain risks and benefits which need to be considered.

Factors to be considered before opting for it

1. Sleep apnea is one of the risk factors of TRT. In this condition, breathing stops and starts repeatedly when you sleep.

2. Acne problems and other skin disorders

3. Swollen breasts. Men with breast cancer should not opt for this treatment.

4. TRT can trigger noncancerous prostate growth.

5. Sperm production is limited or the testicles might shrink

6. Chances of deep vein thrombosis (blood clots in veins) leading to pulmonary embolism (clots burst and lodge into your lungs) are increased.

Benefits of getting a testosterone therapy done

1. Sexual drive, performance and function are improved.

2. Mineral density of the bones gets restored

3. Healthy weight loss, thus improving your body composition

4. Muscle strength and mass improves

5. Mood and energy gets a boost

6. Cognitive functions improve

7. Lessens the risks of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases

8. Improves metabolism

9. Reduces chances of anaemia or improves the condition if you are already suffering from it  If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor.

Hello doctors.
I goes to gym regular and I need to burn a bit amount of fat. please advice me on "green tea"
.what am...
There is no scientific evidence to show that Green Tea or Coffee can reduce any weight. These are all myths. There is no medicine or mix or herbs that can burn body fat. Body weight is due to extra fat/carbs consumed which gets stored as fat. This fat can only be reduced by burning it with Exercise + Light Natural Diet. If you want to reduce weight 1. Download and follow a 1600 calorie diet plan. 2. Do 60 mins intensive exercise daily. 3. Walk a lot. Use steps instead of lifts. 4. Be more active. Stay Fit and Stay Happy.

But LDL and trigs are very high. My diet is also very low - I eat 2 chapatis in the morning 1 in the afternoon and maximum 2 in the evening with lots of veggies. I am a pure vegetarian, away from all vices like alcohol, tobacco or any non veg. I am very depressed. Please help!

Honey with anything hot is bad for health (a very less known fact) Everyone has their own body constitution according to ayurveda. So what might help to lose weight for you may not help you. Also, high LDL and triglycerides point to some underlying medical issue. So kindly consult a diet expert or ayurveda expert for the same.

HI Lybrate USER…. Reason behind obesity is decreased BMR (BASAL METABOLIC RATE. 1) so question is HOW BMR DECREASED…. BMR is mainly depends upon functions of LIVER, THYROID, PANCREASE, and PITUITORY GLAND…A) hypo- functions of these organs reduces BMR and body becomes obese…B) hyper- functions of these organs increases BMR and body becomes lean…C) so if you want to reduce weight then we have to increase BMR…D) so to increase BMR follow few basic things…1) take solid food two times in a day only…2) try to take diet which is easy to digest and according to quantity of hunger…3) eat those fruits only which increases power of digestion and which easily digests LIKE…grapes, pappya, orange, pomgrenate, sweet lime, pineapple, watermelon, muskmelon, strawberry, mulberry…4) strictly avoid fruits which are hard to digests like banana, guava, custardapple, chiku, jackfruit…5) Try to take soups of green gram, lentil, horse gram…. 6) try to take meals inbetween 10 am to 9 pm…. 7) when you take meal do not eat anything for minimum 4 hours…. Detoxification Through Ayurveda

Detoxification Through Ayurveda

You might have indulged in various types of detox regimes, but have you tried the Ayurvedic detox yet? This regime is short, simple and very easy to follow but the benefits it proffers are not possibly limited to a particular aspect of well-being. You can undertake it at any time of the year, but it would be extremely advantageous if you select the juncture between two seasons when your body has already got an alert about the imminent change in the surroundings.

The importance of detoxifying the body: The practice of cleansing the mind and body is considered to be one of the most crucial aspects of Ayurvedic lifestyle. It offers a valuable way of cleaning away all the accumulated toxicity and wastes from the tissues, which ensures optimal health. Modern lifestyle that leaves people stressed out at most times makes it even more necessary to include an overall detoxifying regime in the fitness routine. Today people have to undergo an endless variety of harmful inputs such as environmental pollution, junk food, sedentary lifestyle, psychological stress and anxiety and unresolved emotions. If they are allowed to accumulate within the body, over time they can be deposited in the tissue, and compromise on healthy living.

Advantages of taking part in detoxifications: A simple detoxifying plan that incorporates eating mono-diet, fresh fruits, drinking plenty of fluids in the form of water and other detoxifying fluids along with taking Triphala in the evening helps in supporting the digestion as well as the detoxifying system present within the body. It can also alleviate the physiology by slowing down the flood of damaging inputs and by allowing the body to rest and repair itself.
A plain cleanse can aid in:

  • Improving digestion and metabolic function
  • Promoting regular as well as balanced elimination
  • Supporting the maintenance of proper body weight
  • Nurturing the improved sense of vitality, energy and enthusiasm of life
  • Encouraging a balanced rest cycle
  • Promoting improvement of overall health

When you are willing to take part in Ayurvedic detoxification, it is important that you prepare your body well before the schedule and expose yourself to as less amount of stress as possible. It is advised to take a break from the social sites and electronic devices as they increase the stimulation and don't allow the mind to rest. If you have a habit of drinking or smoking, it is necessary to bid a temporary goodbye to them and follow the detoxification regime as suggested by your physician as closely as possible. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an ayurveda.

Obesity - Can It Lead to Diabetes?

MBBS, CCEBDM
Diabetologist, Bangalore
Obesity - Can It Lead to Diabetes?

Diabetes is a complex group of diseases with a variety of causes. People with diabetes have high blood glucose, also called high blood sugar or hyperglycemia.

Diabetes is a disorder of metabolism, the way the body uses digested food for energy. The digestive tract breaks down carbohydrates, sugars and starches found in many foods, into glucose, a form of sugar that enters the bloodstream. Diabetes develops when the body doesn't make enough insulin or is not able to use insulin effectively, or both.

The two main types of diabetes are:

Type 1 Diabetes: Type 1 diabetes typically occurs in children and young adults, though it can appear at any age. In the past, type 1 diabetes was called juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.

Heredity plays an important part in determining who is likely to develop type 1 diabetes. Genes are passed down from biological parent to child.

Type 2 Diabetes: Type 2 diabetes develops most often in middle-aged and older people who are also overweight or obese. The disease, once rare in youth, is becoming more common in overweight and obese children and adolescents. Type 2 diabetes is caused by a combination of factors, including insulin resistance, a condition in which the body's muscle, fat, and liver cells do not use insulin effectively.

Physical Inactivity, Obesity, and Diabetes: Physical inactivity and obesity are strongly associated with the development of type 2 diabetes. People who are genetically susceptible to type 2 diabetes are more vulnerable when these risk factors are present. About 80 percent of people with type 2 diabetes are overweight or obese.

An imbalance between caloric intake and physical activity can lead to obesity, which causes insulin resistance and is common in people with type 2 diabetes. Central obesity, in which a person has excess abdominal fat, is a major risk factor not only for insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes but also for heart and blood vessel disease, also called cardiovascular diseases (CVD). This excess belly fat produces hormones and other substances that can cause harmful, chronic effects in the body such as damage to blood vessels.

So, measuring your waist is a quick way of assessing your diabetes risk. This is a measure of abdominal obesity, which is a particularly high-risk form of obesity. Women have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes if their waist measures 80cm (31.5 inches) or more. Asian men with a waist size of 89cm (35 inches) or more have a higher risk, as do white or black men with a waist size of 94cm (37 inches) or more.

Simple Steps to Lower Your Risk: Making a few lifestyle changes can dramatically lower the chances of developing type 2 diabetes. The same changes can also lower the chances of developing heart disease and other life taking cancers.

  1. Control Your Weight: Being overweight increases the chances of developing type 2 diabetes seven-fold. Being obese makes you 20 to 40 times more likely to develop diabetes than someone with a healthy weight. Losing weight can help if your weight is above the healthy-weight range. Check your BMI. Losing 7 to 10 percent of your current weight can cut your chances of developing type 2 diabetes in half.
  2. Get Moving and Turn Off the Television: Inactivity promotes type 2 diabetes. Working your muscles more often and making them work harder improves their ability to use insulin and absorb glucose. This puts less stress on your insulin-making cells.
  3. Tune Up Your Diet: Four dietary changes can have a big impact on the risk of type 2 diabetes-

Choose whole grains and wholegrain products over highly processed carbohydrates.

  • Skip the sugary drinks, and choose water, coffee, or tea instead.
  • Choose good fats instead of bad fats.
  • Limit red meat and avoid processed meat; choose nuts, whole grains, poultry, or fish instead.

If you are already suffering from diabetes, then do take a walk everyday and adopt healthy eating habits. Along with that relieve your stress and take proper doses of insulin or medications as prescribed by your doctor. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor.

Start your day with lemon juice This is one of the best therapies to eliminate belly fat. Pinch some yellow juice into a glass of warm water and add some salt to it. Continue drinking this every morning to boost your metabolism and to get rid of that paunch. Stay off from white rice Replace white rice with various wheat products. Include brown rice, brown bread, wholegrains, oats and quinoa in your diet. Avoid sugary substances Stay away from sweets, sweetened drinks and foods rich in oil. Consuming these foods can increase body fat around various areas of your body like abdomen and thighs. Drink plenty of water If you want to get rid of your belly, then drink sufficient amount of water every day. Drinking water, after regular intervals will help to boost your metabolism and remove toxins from your body. Eat raw garlic Chew two to three cloves of garlic every morning, and drink a glass of lemon water after that. This treatment will double up your weight loss process and make your blood circulation smooth in your body. Avoid non-veg food To eliminate belly fat, it is recommended that one should avoid non-vegetarian food as far as possible. Load up on fruits and vegetables Eat a bowl of fruits daily in the morning and evening. This will fill you up with many antioxidants, minerals and vitamins. Spice up your cooking Use spices like cinnamon, ginger and black pepper in your cooking. These spices are loaded with health benefits. They help to improve your insulin resistance and reduce levels of sugar in your blood.

You can try modified atkins diet. It's a double edged sword which will help you to control seizures as well as to reduce weight. The Modified Atkins diet limits carbohydrates to 15 gms per day and emphasizes protein and fat intake for weight loss. Allowed breakfast foods include high-fat meats such as bacon, sausage and ham, as well as eggs and cheese. You can add small amounts of low-carb vegetables to eggs for omelets. Low-carb breads may be allowed in small amounts, as long as the total carbohydrate intake remains within the prescribed levels. You can use butter liberally. Pancakes can be made from soy or almond flour, which are not made from grains. Don't drink fruit juices, which contain large amounts of carbohydrates. For lunch and dinner, mix tuna or chicken salad with mayonnaise, a high-fat, low-carb food. Low-carb vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, onions, spinach, cabbage, string beans, spaghetti squash and Brussels sprouts. Limit fruits to the allowed carbohydrate count, which will add up to very little fruit. If you are a complete vegetarian Tofu, Nuts & Seeds like pumpkin & sunflower seeds, beans, long grain brown rice, cottage cheese etc can be considered as substitutes for meat. You should consult your doctor before starting Modified Atkins Diet. As far as exercises are concerned you can engage in walking, swimming, games like volley ball and tennis etc. Yoga also will be ideal as it will help to reduce the stress levels which is usually a trigger for seizures. Try to have someone around you who can help in case of seizures when you exercise. You can try acupuncture as a treatment for seizures. Acupuncture effectively alleviates epilepsy, a nervous system disorder characterized by unregulated brain cell activity causing seizures. New research finds acupuncture combined with medications is more effective than using only medications as a therapy for epilepsy.
