Health Benefits of Guava

PGD IN ULTRAASONOGRAPHY, Non invasive cardiology course, MD - Medicine, MBBS
General Physician, Narnaul
Health Benefits of Guava

We've all enjoyed a plateful of guavas, sprinkled with chaat masala and also savoured it in luscious jams, jellies and murabbas, so it's time we find out why our grandmothers have always spoken so highly about this seasonal treat. Guava, popularly known as amrood in hindi, packs an intoxicating strong-sweet fragrance and a distinct taste. Loaded with tiny hard seeds at the center, this tropical fruit is believed to have its origin in central america where it is also known as plum. It is round or oval in shape with light green or light yellow skin, and the colour of its flesh varies from white or pink to dark red and has edible seeds.

Besides its unique flavour and fragrance, guava has been hailed as one of the super fruits due to the numerous health benefits it offers. It indeed is a powerhouse of nutrients. This humble fruit is extraordinarily rich in vitamin c, lycopene and antioxidants that arebeneficial for skin. Guavas are also rich in manganese which helps the body to absorb other key nutrients from the food that we eat. Guavas contain folate, a mineral which helps promote fertility. The potassium in guavas helps normalise blood pressure levels as well. In fact, a banana and a guava contain almost the same amount of potassium. Since it contains about 80% of water it helps keep your skin hydrated, says Dr. Manoj k. Ahuja, sukhda hospital. Here are 15 mind-blowing guava benefits for health and skin you need to know.

Guava for health

1. Immunity booster
Did you know: guavas are one of the richest sources of vitamin c it's true. Guavas contain 4 times the vitamin c content present in oranges. Vitamin c helps improve immunity and protects you against common infections and pathogens.

2. Lowers risk of cancer
lycopene, quercetin, vitamin c and other polyphenols act as potent antioxidants which neutralise free radicals generated in the body, preventing the growth of cancer cells. Guavas have shown to be widely successful in reducing prostate cancer risk and also inhibit the growth of breast cancer cells since it is rich in lycopene, says Dr. Manoj k. Ahuja.

3. Diabetes-friendly
Due to the rich fibre content and low glycaemic index, guavas prevent the development of diabetes. While the low glycemic index inhibits a sudden spike in sugar levels, the fibre content ensures the sugar levels are well regulated.

4. Heart healthy
Guavas improve the sodium and potassium balance of the body, thereby regulating blood pressure in patients with hypertension. Guavas also help lower the levels of triglycerides and bad cholesterol (ldl), which contribute to the development of heart disease. This magical fruit improves levels of the good cholesterol (hdl).

5. Treats constipation
It is one of the richest sources of dietary fiber in comparison to other fruits and just 1 guava fulfills about 12% of your daily recommended intake of fibre, which makes it extremely beneficial for your digestive health. Guava seeds, if ingested whole or chewed, serve as excellent laxatives too, helping the formation of healthy bowel movements.

6. Improves eyesight
Due to the presence of vitamin A, guava is well known as a booster for vision health. It can not only prevent degradation of eyesight, but even improve eyesight. It can help slow down the appearance of cataracts and macular degeneration. Even though guavas are not as rich in vitamin A as carrots, they are still a very good source of the nutrient.

7. Guava during pregnancy
Guavas contain folic acid, or vitamin b-9, which is recommended for pregnant women since it can help in developing the baby's nervous system and protect the newborn from neurological disorders.

8. Beats toothache
Guava leaves have a potent anti-inflammatory action and a powerful antibacterial ability which fights infection and kills germs. Thus, consuming guava leaves works as a fantastic home remedy for toothache. The juice of guava leaves has also been known to cure toothaches, swollen gums and oral ulcers.

9. Stress-buster
The magnesium present in guavas helps to relax the muscles and nerves of the body. So after a hard workout or a long day at the office, a guava is certainly what you need to relax your muscles, combat stress and give your system a good energy boost.

10. Good for your brain
Guavas contain vitamin b3 and vitamin b6, also known as niacin and pyridoxine respectively, which help in improving blood circulation to the brain, stimulating cognitive function and relaxing the nerves, remarks Dr. Manoj k. Ahuja.

11. Weight loss
Want to shed a few pounds? guava is just the ticket. Without compromising your intake of proteins, vitamins and fiber, guava helps you lose weight by regulating your metabolism. It's a win-win! guava makes for a very filling snack and satisfies the appetite very easily. Guava, especially raw guava, also has far less sugar as compared to apples, oranges, grapes, and other fruits.

12. Cough and cold
Guava has one of the highest quantities of vitamin-c and iron among fruits, and both are proven to be preventive against cold and viral infections. The juice of raw and immature guavas or a decoction of guava-leaves is very helpful in relieving cough and cold since it helps get rid of mucus and disinfects the respiratory tract, throat and lungs.

Guava for skin

13. Anti-ageing properties
Guavas are rich in vitamin a, vitamin c and antioxidants like carotene and lycopene which help protect the skin from wrinkles. A guava a day, keeps fine lines away!

14. Improves complexion
Guava helps regain the skin radiance and freshness. Reap the benefits by preparing a DIY scrub at home: all you have to do is mash some guava flesh with an egg yolk and apply it on your face. Rinse off after 20 minutes with warm water. When used once or twice a week, this scrub will remove dead cells from your skin and lighten your complexion. Guavas are also a great source of vitamin k, which helps get rid of skin discoloration, dark circles, redness and acne irritation.

15. Improves texture
Guavas rank high in astringent properties, guava leaves and unripe guavas even higher. Guava helps tone up and tighten the facial muscles, so apply a decoction of the leaves and fruit on your skin and voila!

I am 43 years old I have severely affected in back pain and joint pain due to uric acid. Kindly give your valuable guidance for control the above.

MBBS, MD - Internal Medicine

A high uric acid level can be caused when your body either produces too much uric acid or your kidneys don't eliminate uric acid rapidly enough. A high uric acid level may cause increasingly frequent attacks of gout, or it may never cause problems. A high uric acid level may also cause some people to develop kidney stones or kidney failure. And some people with a high uric acid level also develop high blood pressure, heart disease or chronic kidney disease, but it's often unclear whether this is a direct cause or merely an early warning sign of these conditions. Factors that may cause a high uric acid level in your blood include: Diuretic medications (water pills),Drinking too much alcohol,Genetics (inherited tendencies),hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid),Immune-suppressing drugs,Niacin, or vitamin B-3, obesity, psoriasis, Purine-rich diet — organ meat, game meat, anchovies, herring, gravy, dried beans, driedpeas, mushrooms and other foods Renal insufficiency — inability of the kidneys to filter waste Tumor lysis syndrome — a rapid release of cells into the blood caused by certain cancers or by chemotherapy for those cancers,Also, you may be monitored for high uric acid levels when undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatment for cancer. Avoid protein diets, avoid more milk products. bad habits , fast food/fat/oily,salty foods. Coffee, smoking, alcohol intake. Non-veg., take whole grain, oats, green veg.,plenty of water in day time, 1 glass of water at night before bed.

Complete Infertility Investigation - Why is It Important?

MBBS, DNB - Obstetrics and Gynecology, DGO
Gynaecologist, Delhi
Complete Infertility Investigation - Why is It Important?

While some couples conceive with ease, conceiving a child can be extremely difficult for others. In cases where a woman is not able to get pregnant despite having regular intercourse in tune with her biological cycle, infertility tests may be suggested to investigate the reason behind this. In most cases, these tests are suggested if a year has gone by without intercourse resulting in a pregnancy. Women may also be said to be infertile, if they cannot carry a foetus to full term.

Infertility can affect both men and women and can be triggered by a number of different reasons. In some cases, it is treatable while in others, alternative ways of having a family may need to be discussed. Hence, it is very important to understand the different types and triggers for infertility and to undergo complete infertility investigations. Some of the common types of infertility investigations are as given below.

  1. Blood tests: A blood test of both partners is used to assess the general health of the couple and to identify any health factors that may be impeding fertility.
  2. Tests for women:
    1. Hysterosalpingogram: This is an X ray that can identify if a blockage or any other issue in the fallopian tubes are the cause for infertility.
    2. Pelvic ultrasound: This is used to have a look at the anatomy of the female reproductive system and to check for fibroids.
    3. Laparoscopy / hysteroscopy: This is used to get a clearer picture of the ovaries, uterus and other parts of the reproductive system.
    4. Tracking cycle: Ovulation and the thickness of the uterus lining may also affect infertility, This can be diagnosed by tracking and assessing the menstrual cycle.
  3. Tests for men
    1. Semen analysis:This test is used to get an idea of sperm concentration, motility and the appearance of sperm in a man’s semen. In some cases, the semen may not include any sperm cells. In such cases, a follow up investigation may be required to assess if sperm cells are being created in the testicles. This is known as testicular sperm aspiration or a testicular biopsy.
    2. Sperm DNA: The DNA in sperm also plays an important role in fertility. This test is used to assess the sperm DNA integrity and to see how it may affect embryo development and chances of an on-going pregnancy.

Infertility treatment depends on the cause identified by the above tests and hence it is important for both partners to undergo complete testing. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a gynaecologist.

DM type 2 report is in control you r on inj mixtard long acting do HBA1C DONOT change dose self show your diabetalogist so that they may even stop insulin and put you on tablet or decrease dose THYROID is ok then also need visit to your doctor r you HTN since when now mild nepropathy is their mild stage do liver function test LIPID profile USG abdomen ECG ECHO main aim is your maintain proper diet & decrease weight DIET FOR DM Food Should be distributed into small frequent feeds. The days requirement should be well distributed between the different meals. Skipping a meal or fasting is not really advisable. As far as possible, the patient should maintain ideal body weight. Considering the height, weight, activity, age and sex of the individual the days calorie requirement can be calculated. Of the total calories 55-65% should come from CHO's 15-20% from protein and the remaining 15-20% from fats. General Instructions to be followed Different cereals contain almost the same amount of CHO and so the quantity of cereal consumed should be noted rather than the type consumed. Whole grain cereals are better, preferred for their fibre content and satiety value. Rice Gruel if consumed, should be done so by discarding the rice water, and adding hot water. When consuming wheat porridge, it is better to have it with pulses than using coconut milk in it. Include whole pulses in the diet, soya products help to reduce cholesterol. Sprouted pulses are more nutrious. Fish can be included in the diet, in the curry form. Fried fish is the best avoided. Shell fishes like prawns, lobsters etc should be avoided. Poultry (Without Skin) can be used occasionally. Beef, Pork, mutton, liver etc should be avoided by cardiac patients. Trim off Excess fat (if any) before cooking. Egg yolk has to be avoided by individuals with hyperlipidemia. Milk and its products need not to be used more than 400 ml/ day. Use skimmed milk whenever possible, otherwise cream has to be removed before consumption. Root Vegetable like Tapioca, yam, potato, colocasia etc are better avoided and if used, should be in moderation instead of cereals. Include more vegetables (esp. Raw salads and green leafy vegetables) in your diet, as it is rich in fibre which in turn helps to reduce blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Raw salads with sprouted pulses enhances the nutrient composition. Fruits are restricted for diabetics and preferably should be consumed as such than having it in the form of juice. Select low calorie fruits from exchange list. Cardiac and hypertensive patients can take 3-4 servings of fruits. Whenever possible consume fruits with edible skins eg. Apple. Guava etc. Use of coconut and its products must be minimized. Cardiac patients need not restrict the intake of tender coconut water, whereas diabetes can only use it occasionally. It is better to avoid nuts like badam, peanuts, cashew nuts etc. But Occasionally can be used in restricted amounts instead of some other food items so that the calories remain unchanged. Sugar and sweet should be avoided by diabetic patients. Low calorie sweeteners can be used in moderation as substitutes for sugar, honey, sweets etc. Cardiac and hypertensive patients should minimize their intake of sugar and sweets. Garlic, curry leaves, fenugreek seeds cluster beans, oatbran etc have blood sugar and cholesterol loosing efforts. Ginger, foods in rich with Vit- E and B Carotene reduces the risk of cardiac diseases. Alcohol intake injurious to health, 1 ml of Alcohol contains 7 calories. Alcohol can cause hypoglyemia and can increase triglycerides which can be harmful for the heart. Cooking oil used should be minimized and may be restricted to 10-15 ml/day. (2-3 tsp). Use cooking methods that require little or no fat. Hidden fat in bakery products and snacks should also be taken into account. Preferably use a combination of cooking oils like sesame. Ground nut, sunflower, rice bran, corn oil etc. Use of coconut and palm oil should be maintained at minimum levels. Dinner should be enjoyed two hours before retiring. At bed time either diluted milk of fruit can be consumed. Include foods from all the different food groups and thus consume a balanced diet. Regular exercise is most useful but physical strain after a meal should be avoided. Free foods (can be included liberally) Thin buttermilk, unsweetened lime juice, jeera water, fenugreek water, raw vegetable salads made of low calorie vegetables, plain clear soups etc. Pappads, pickles, dried fish etc Canned and Salt preserved foods Sauces, soup cubes Sausages, lobsters, meat and yeast extracts Carbonated beverages Readymade foods like cornflakes, noodles, fast foods etc. Proprietary drinks eg. My sister tsh hormone level is 10 and I am overweight. What kind of treatment I should do. Please help me.
Mr Pinakesh, If TSH level is 10 milli units / ml, it is high, signifying she has hypothyroidism and needs to start treatment immediately. Otherwise, symptoms of hypothyroidism can be quite severe and troublesome. Hypothyroidism leads to weight gain, so that has to be controlled, then initiation of treatment is very essential.
