My 5-year-old daughter has asthma. What is the effect of using an asthma preventer long-term? I heard that using it for years might cause bone shrinkage. Is it true? Are there any vitamins or supplements to help vision?

MBBS
General Physician, Mumbai
If steroids are given orally for long periods of time than only it will cause bone shrinkage but if given through nebulisation than it won't have any side effects

I am suffering from some eyes problem like tears in some time when I am looking any books or t. V. Shows. So can you help me.

FICO, DNB Ophtalmology
Ophthalmologist, Gandhinagar
Hi lybrate-user. I have a few suggestions for you regarding the usage of television, computers, books and mobile phones. Follow the rule of" 20" this means that every 20 minutes, take a gap of 20 seconds, blink your eyes actively 20 times and focus at an object which is minimum 20 feet away. This will help in relieving your eyes from the continuous strain that is caused due to staring. Staring at the computer continuously causes us to subconsciously blink less than normal. This causes the tear film on the surface of the eye to dry up. The result of this is pain, discomfort, etc. Another suggestions regarding the usage of computers is to maintain a proper posture. The computer must be positioned at the same height as your eye level. The neck should not be inadvertently flexed or extended. Roughly, an angle of 90 degrees should be maintained between your upper body and thighs. Likewise, a similar angle (90 degrees) should be maintained between your lower legs and thighs. Also the angle between your hands and arms should be roughly 90 degrees. This is the healthy ergonomic way of sitting while using a computer. Maintenance of proper posture would help in further relieving the symptoms of eye discomfort and pain. All these suggestions may take a while to sink in and imbibe in your routine. Once followed, they are sure to work wonders for you.

Hi doctor, I've resigned my job before 1 year. In this one year gap, my sleeping time has changed dramatically. Due to no job, I'll spend all night playing clash of clans (android mobile game) or I'll watch English tv serials. Usually I'll sleep at around 5 to 6 am. And I'll wake up around 2 pm. I know this is strange but tried to change this habit but I failed several times. Now I got a job in Kuwait. I've to join there within 2 months. So in this gap I need to change my sleeping time. Doctor please help me out. Thanks.

Lasik is a simple laser procedure which changes the shape of the cornea so that the light rays fall on the retina properly. It is a painless procedure. It is a day care procedure does not require any injections, does not require admission, you can simply resume your duties in 2 days. Cost varies from centre to centre. Side effects are usually limited to dryness of eyes for few months. We can do lasik anytime after age of 18 years. You need to undergo proper prelasik checkup to decide whether lasik is safe for you or not.

Get your refraction done and wear spectacles eat green veggies. Carrots. Strain less your eyes. Relax your eyes in between work. Blink regularily if working for long time on computer. Lower the brightness of your screen. Work under adequately illuminated conditions. If needed wear corrective spectacles. These r few things you can take care of. Otherwise as such no options available which wd increases your eyesight.

I've got my c3r done in both my eyes. But there is always an urge to rub my eyes. Can you tell me what are the ways by which I can take some precautions. And is there any thing to worry about.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
CLEANING YOUR EYE:- For the first week following surgery you should protect the eye from injury. Do not rub or put pressure on the eye. Take small pieces of cotton wool and place them in a bowl containing water. Boil for 15 minutes and keep the bowl covered. Wash your hands with soap. Take a small piece of the sterilized cotton wool from the bowl. Squeeze out the excess water. Clean the discharge around the upper and lower lids without applying pressure on the eye. This is generally needed in the morning as long as the ointment is being used at bed time. Fresh cotton is to be boiled twice a day if needed. PUTTING EYE DROPS:- Never use a pin/needle to open the eye drop bottle. Screw on the cap tight to open it. Retract the lower lid and instill one drop of the prescribed eye drop into the eye. Eye drops should be used as per the prescription. Only 1 drop at a time is enough. Keep both eyes closed for atleast 10 minutes after each eye drop. PROTECTING YOUR EYES:- Put on dark glasses throughout the day for one week. Wipe tears below the margin of the dark glasses. Do not touch the eye. Do not place cotton wool between the glasses and the eye. Do not sleep on the operated side for 2 days. For the first 5 days from the time of operation, take a bath below the neck. Face and hair can be washed after 5 days. But avoid getting water inside the eye. ACTIVITIES:- Avoid strenuous activities. Do not lift any objects heavier than 10 kg for about 5 days after the surgery You may start reading and watching TV after 2 days. Take rest frequently with both eyes closed. Many people return to light work immediately after surgery, but please discuss your needs with your doctor during your post operative visit (next day). Ask your doctor about any specific activities you may have in mind as in leaving town, driving, yoga, walks, gym etc. FOLLOW UP VISITS: Please come for a post operative check up as advised upon discharge. Generally the next day, one week and one month post-op. As a routine all operated eyes should be checked once every six months even if you have no problem. If you have any further questions regarding your surgery or post operative treatment kindly speak to the Nurse who will coordinate with your doctor to answer your queries. Collagen Crosslinking treatment in one of the latest advancements in ophthalmology. Internationally launched at the ESCRS conference in London in September 2006. This treatment provides a ray of hope for lacs of Indian keratoconus patients. C3R is a non-surgical procedure. Only known procedure that is proven to halt the progression of the dreaded Keratoconus. This treatment now offers an end to a lifetime of waiting and uncertainty for Keratoconus patients. This is a simple one-time treatment that offers a permanent solution to Keratoconus. It does not require heavy precautions or regular follow-up visits, does not need an eye donor as required in ‘Corneal Transplant’, does not require any stitches or incisions in the eye, takes around one hour and the recovery is quick. This procedure is a boon for patients with keratoconus. I'm 31 years old. Im masturbating for quite long time. Recently I have got low back pain, blurred vision, disturbed sleep, body ache, tired and less memory and focus. Kindly help me to overcome this.

MBBS, MD - Psychiatry, MBA (Healthcare)
Psychiatrist, Davanagere
Good Morning ~ Masturbation is not an unusual phenomenon and I would think that you might have negative attitudes about it and therefore have put it on paper. Let me assure you that it is not a problem unless you are doing it only to relieve your sexual energies due to either extreme sexual urges or non-availability of a sexual partner. The low back pain, disturbed sleep, bodyache, tiredness, low memory and focus are some of the symptoms are excessive masturbation. If you could control the number of times you masturbate in a day the symptoms may gradually subside, however you should get an ophthalmological opinion for the blurred vision. If you believe there are other causes for the symptoms that you describe, I appreciate you letting me know and we can take it from there.
