Your Tooth Is Alive

BDS
Dentist, Pune
Your Tooth Is Alive

The most exciting thing about our oral cavity is your teeth are alive and not a dead bone. They grow just like your other organs and they do respond to many factors like nutrition, injury and bacteria.

It is important to understand what teeth, saliva, gums are all about. Lets have a quick overview of all the important structures in our mouth.

The anatomy:-

  • There is a structure in the center of the tooth known as pulp. This pulp contains blood vessels that provides nutrition to the tooth and nerves that carries sensation to the tooth.
  • This pulp is extended till the root tips at the bottom through root canals. This pulp is very fragile. Two protective coverings are there to en box the pulp i. E dentin which is yellow in color and it is closer to pulp. Second and outermost layer is enamel which is white in color.
  • The enamel decides the final color of tooth. Stronger the enamel structure the brighter the tooth looks.
  • Then comes the gums (gingiva), it gives the enveloping and protective covering to your tooth. It even acts as barrier and protects the intrusion of bacteria from outside. There are more than 400 species of bacteria that are trying to enter your blood stream through our mouth. Healthy gums provides the protection from all of them.
  • The roots of the tooth is attached to the jaw bone with the structure called as cementum and attachment fiber. This acts as shock absorb er and protects the tooth from biting forces.
  • Every tooth structure has its own role and importance.
  • Apart from gums dentin and other tooth structures serves important role to maintain it into a healthy state.
  • In coming blogs we will discuss the process of cavity formation and other problems in oral cavity.

I have an oral infection, in my tongue. I visit my nearest E.N.T. Doctor. He think its ulcer, but he personally told my husband its maybe cancer. So how can I know that its ulcer or cancer?

BDS, Certified Implantologist, Certified Orthodontist, Inman Aligner

Most ulcers in the mouth heal by themselves. Any ulcer that does not heal by itself within 2-3 weeks may be suspected to be ulcer. Kindly visit your nearest Dentist with an MDS in Oral Medicine and Radiology at the earliest.

Mouth dryness and burning sensation may continue after therapy. Salivary flow will gradually increase, but may not completely return to normal. To add moisture to your mouth it is helpful to Carry a water bottle to wet your mouth as needed.Drink at least eight glasses of water or juices per day.Keep caffeine at a minimum.Avoid alcohol and tobacco products.Moisten foods with gravies or sauces.Chew sugar free gum or suck on sugar free sour drops.Try artificial saliva.Ask your physician, dentist or nurse to recommend commercial products that are available for dry mouth.Use a cool moist vaporizer.

Hi I have problems with my teeth Recently, I had two lower left molar teeth of mine starting to chip piece by piece. I got the root canal treatment and capped both after which one more lower right molar chipped a month ago which I got fixed with a filling. Now today, one more upper molar tooth chipped in between the side surface. When I ask the dentist why is that happening, they do not even bother to reply and I have asked three dentist about that. Is there any dentist out there who can tell what's going on. Follow with me up for any more questions you have. Help me.

Hi
I have problems with my teeth

If the tooth breaks, have the tooth contoured. Fill the crack in. Place a crown on your tooth. If the tooth has been badly damaged and the nerve or pulp is exposed, the dentist may have to perform a root canal to save the tooth. To prevent cracking of tooth, avoid chewing on hard objects. Avoid grinding your teeth. Wear a mouthguard when playing sports. Poor oral hygiene will weaken teeth and make them more susceptible to damage. Composite bonding is a way to repair chipped teeth.

Periodontal Disease - 7 Ways You Can Manage and Prevent them

MDS , BDS
Dentist, Delhi
Periodontal Disease - 7 Ways You Can Manage and Prevent them

The gums are also called the periodontium which means perio for around and dontium for tooth as the gums are literally present "around the tooth."  There is a softer mucosal portion that runs along the tooth in a curved manner and a stronger fibrous portion that connects the tooth to the jaw bone.  Together, they provide the structural support for the tooth to be held in place. In addition they also have an aesthetic value with the healthy pink color.

The mouth has the largest number of bacteria in the body, which act on the food debris that is present on the tooth and the gums. This causes infection in both the gums and the tooth.

Types: Periodontal disease can be localized or general.

  1. Localized disease happens when a tooth is not accessible for thorough cleaning.  The inside surface of lower incisors and outer surfaces of the upper last molars are common areas of localized periodontal disease.
  2. Generalized periodontal disease can be due to conditions like pregnancy, puberty, diabetes problem where gums around all the teeth are affected.

Symptoms: In both the cases, the following symptoms ensue:

  1. The gums are of a healthy pink color and if they turn darker hue of pink
  2. Swollen and/or painful gums
  3. Spontaneous bleeding: This may be localized or generalized
  4. Chronic bad breath: Due to food accumulation in the infected gums
  5. If it continues to form an abscess, pressure on the gums can produce pus
  6. Bad taste in the mouth (arising from pus in the gums)
  7. Gingival recession, producing an effect of having longer tooth
  8. Dentin is exposed leading sensitivity to hot or cold foods
  9. Loosening of the tooth
  10. Painful chewing, as it puts pressure on the inflamed periodontium
  11. Dentist will identify what are called pockets, which is an indication of severity - the deeper the pockets, the severe the disease.

Management and Prevention: Gum disease is very easy to identify and can be completely cured.

  1. Regular brushing and flossing can help maintain regular oral hygiene
  2. With each brushing session, plain finger massage of the gums improves blood circulation and their overall health
  3. Regular use of mouth rinse is a good way to improve gum health
  4. Regular visits to the dentist can help keep a check on the health of the teeth and the gums - early identification of disease and early treatment
  5. Once it has set in, deep scaling followed by root planing may be required to thoroughly clear out the infection
  6. More surgical options like gingival grafts, flap surgery, bone grafting in case of severe bone loss may be required.
  7. Management of conditions like diabetes

The best way to avoid periodontal disease is to know its symptoms, follow oral hygiene practices, and consult a dentist regularly.

Each tooth has five distinct sides; a toothbrush cleans only 3 of those 5 sides. The other two sides are where much of the destruction and disease (not to mention foul odors) originate: the in between areas. These remaining two sides require dental floss or tiny inter-dental brushes that can reach in-between and under the contact points of the teeth. Gum disease is linked to life-threatening illnesses such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and premature low birth weight babies.

Hello Lybrate user, thanks for your query. To get your teeth into correct alignment you need Orthodontic treatment (braces). The treatment duration may range from 1.2 - 2 years depending on your severity. Since you are looking for low cost, you can opt for traditional metal braces. Quit habits strictly. Seems like you have oral submucous fibrosis (osmf). Kindly consult an oral & maxillo facial surgeon in person for further suggestion. We need more investigations with clinical examination to decide upon treatment. You may need conservative or surgical management for mouth opening depending upon the stage of osmf. Advise full mouth opening, ballooning exercise & side to side movement of the jaw. Wrap 25 to 30 ice-cream sticks, make a bundle, put it between upper & lower front teeth for 15 minutes thrice a day increase 1 sticks each day.

Patients often go through pain and soreness during orthodontic treatment. One way to dull the pain is to gargle with 8 ounces of lukewarm water with one teaspoonful of salt dissolved in it. Swishing it around the mouth and them spitting it out will lessen the pain and provide relief.
