This could b either due to sensitivity due to loss of enamel surface or due to decay of tooth. Tooth decay can b treated by filling of tooth or by rct n capping of the decay is deep. Sensitivity can b reduced by using desensitizing toothpaste such as senquelf or sensodyne toothpaste by rubbing some amount of toothpaste onto your tooth surface n wait till 5 mins before rinsing it off. Get your teeth evaluated by dentist to know the cause of your problem n get treated accordingly. Regsrds.

Our teeth are as important as the rest of our body parts. So, cleaning them for at least 2 to 3 minutes is necessary for their health.

Why do the doctors ask whether the patient has artificial tooth, while admitting him. Is there any connection between dental disease and heart problems.

Dear Lybrate user, the doctors usually ask for artificial teeth while admitting patients in the hospital with regards to removable partial or complete dentures. Any patient who requires oxygen mask or tubings through the mouth or neck area for breathing or nutrition or a patient who is unconscious has to get the denture plates removed because it involves the risk of aspiration/accidental swallowing. The link between poor oral hygiene and heart disease is limited to the fact that a person with poor oral health and bacteria in his mouth stands a risk of transfer of these bacteria to the heart via the blood stream. Otherwise, dentures, crowns/caps, bridges, fillings, implants etc do not have any role in causing heart problems.

Nothing to worry. Kindly consult a dentist in person for further suggestion. We need more investigations with clinical examination to decide upon treatment. You may need Coronoplasty (smoothen teeth edges) along with Multivitamin cap, for five days in the morning after meals & antiseptic ointment or gel on the area of ulcer until then. Mouth sores are common and rarely cause complications. Most go away in about a week, but it’s important to monitor any mouth sores you develop. If you are concerned, or if the sore doesn’t seem to be healing, contact your dentist Rinse your mouth thoroughly with a mouth wash after every meals. Advance procedures can be done with laser. You may consult me in person.

Hello lybrate-user, the only treatment left for painful tooth is either rct or its removal. This pain develop due to cavities spreading deeper inside the tooth and it's neglect in initial stage leads to this situation. I suggest you to believe your dentist and go ahead for rct as it is the only way to save the tooth.

Dear lybrate-user, the broken tooth you are referring to, is causing pain as its nerves have become exposed. Most likely, you may have had a long-standing cavity, or may have chewed something extremely hard, that led to loss of a part of the tooth. The most reliable treatment in such cases is an rct, wherein the pain gets relieved permanently. I suggest that that you consult me privately on lybrate, so that I can provide more specific answers. You will be able to send across images of your damaged tooth/teeth, and looking at them will help me be in a better position to solve your problem.

How Dental Veneers Are Beneficial

BDS, CDE Endo-Prostho, CDE - Cast Partial & Complete Dentures

How Dental Veneers Are Beneficial

Dental veneers are also known as porcelain veneers are very thin, artificially made shell like things found in shades of the colour of your teeth. This material is designed to cover up the tooth surface in order to improve its appearance. These materials are changed according to your teeth colour, size and shape.
Dental veneers can solve many problems and especially better the look of your teeth. The removal or insertion of veneers can make your teeth look attractive.

Some problems that dental veneers solve:

  1. If your teeth are discoloured then veneers can fix it. Teeth stains can be the result of many things like smoking, alcohol, drugs, medicines etc. Veneers replace stained teeth and solve all your problems.
  2. If your teeth are frayed down then veneers can be the solution.
  3. If your teeth are broken or chipped then it can solve the problem.
  4. Sometimes your teeth grow uneven, misaligned, badly shaped; dental veneers solve that problem too.
  5. Dental veneers specifically work to fill the gaps between your teeth.

Dental veneers have proven to be a beneficial process in solving many of your dental problems. But like every medical method that comes with some advantage and disadvantage, dental veneers too have a few negative points.

The advantages of dental veneers are:

  1. It provides a presentable tooth appearance.
  2. The tissues in your gum tolerate porcelain very well.
  3. The porcelain dental veneer is stain resistant.
  4. You can select the colour of the veneer to make your teeth whiter.
  5. You can also change the shape of your teeth.

As dental veneers are a little complicated, there is a set of procedures to have dental veneers and those may include:

  • Diagnosis: First, you need to detect the problem area before you have dental veneers.
  • Treatment: You need to have an X-ray of your teeth and mouth before getting dental veneers.
  • Preparation: Between your diagnosis and treatment while your tooth enamel is a subject of examination you should take proper care of your teeth. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a dentist.

Dentists: which foods help in the re-mineralization of teeth after having something sweet? -cheese -apple -carrots?

MDS - Orthodontics, BDS
Dentist, Noida
Re-mineralisation of tooth occurs when it is provided with Ca or fluoride ions. Presently we say Fluoride . Above mentioned food does not contain fluoride . Cheese contains Ca , but it is not free Ca ions so vitamin D and Ca helps in remineralisation by getting absorbed in body. For Surface remineralisation of teeth locally fluoride is important which is present in tooth paste ,certain oral rinses (Phosflur) etc ,but concentration of fluoride is low and requires longer time (few months) . Other way of re-mineralisation of teeth is done in dental office(this is much faster due to high concentration of fluoride) where APF gels and Fluoride Varnishes are used to remineralize external surface of tooth. All type de-mineralised surfaces cannot be re mineralised by any of above mentioned things and these require dental treatment like dental caries.

Due to excess fluoride there are brown marks/stains on my teeth. To make my teeth white what's the treatment?
If the stains are because of excessive flouride ,it is intrinsic type of stains. Bleaching will not be effective in your case. you may need artificial enamel filling or crowning .

Tooth ache since one week. I had shown to a Doctor he told me I will require a root canal. Is it painful?

MDS - Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

Tooth ache since one week. I had shown to a Doctor he told me I will require a root canal. Is it painful?
We need more investigations with clinical examination to decide upon treatment. You may need cleaning, root canal treatment & capping. Until then apply clove oil on the decayed tooth. Rinse frequently with mouth wash. Root canal treatment is performed after giving local anaesthesia injection. So it is not painful during the procedure.Once the LA effect gets over, your painkillers will help you to overcome the pain.Donot fear of RCT.

I have dental problem. Bleeding in gums, gums are swelling and foul breathe. What to do? Some home made remedies.
Bleeding gums with swelling and foul breath are indicative of gum disease due to improper hygiene leading to tartar accumulation on your teeth. You need to visit your dentist and gets thorough dental cleaning done to get rid of the problem. After that you can maintain your teeth and gums by following the routine cleaning protocols. No home remedy will remove the tartar from your teeth. Some remedy may reduce the bleeding for the time being but any delay in getting the tartar removed may lead to recession (root ward movement) of your gums.

It can be a problem of tmj. Common symptoms include: •Pain or tenderness in your face, jaw joint area, neck and shoulders, and in or around the ear when you chew, speak, or open your mouth wide •Problems when you try to open your mouth wide •Jaws that get" stuck" or" lock" in the open- or closed-mouth position •Clicking, popping, or grating sounds in the jaw joint when you open or close your mouth or chew. This may or may not be painful. •A tired feeling in your face •Trouble chewing or a sudden uncomfortable bite -- as if the upper and lower teeth are not fitting together properly •Swelling on the side of your face You may also have toothaches, headaches, neck aches, dizziness, earaches, hearing problems, upper shoulder pain, and ringing in the ears (tinnitus). Home Treatments for TMD Home Treatments for TMD There are things you can do on your own to help relieve TMD symptoms. Your doctor may suggest you try some of these remedies together. •Use moist heat or cold packs. Apply an ice pack to the side of your face and temple area for about 10 minutes. Do a few simple jaw stretches (if your dentist or physical therapist OKs them). When you’re done, hold a warm towel or washcloth to the side of your face for about 5 minutes. Perform this routine a few times each day. •Eat soft foods. Add yogurt, mashed potatoes, cottage cheese, soup, scrambled eggs, fish, cooked fruits and vegetables, beans, and grains to your menu. Cut foods into small pieces so you chew less. Skip hard, crunchy foods (like pretzels and raw carrots), chewy foods (like caramels and taffy), and thick or large bites that require you to open wide. •Avoid extreme jaw movements. Keep yawning and chewing (especially gum or ice) to a minimum and don’t yell, sing, or do anything that forces you to open wide. •Don't rest your chin on your hand. Don’t hold the phone between your shoulder and ear. Practice good posture to reduce neck and facial pain. •Keep your teeth slightly apart as often as you can. This will relieve pressure on your jaw. Put your tongue between your teeth to control clenching or grinding during the day. •Learn relaxation techniques to help loosen up your jaw. Ask your dentist if you need physical therapy or massage. Consider stress reduction therapy as well as biofeedback. TREATMENT PRESCRIBED BY A DENTIST •Medications. Your dentist can prescribe higher doses of NSAIDs if you need them for pain and swelling. He might suggest a muscle relaxer to relax your jaw if you grind or clench your teeth. Or an anti-anxiety medication to relieve stress, which may bring on TMD. In low doses they can also help reduce or control pain. Muscle relaxants, anti-anxiety drugs, and antidepressants are available by prescription only. •A splint or night guard. These plastic mouthpieces fit over your upper and lower teeth so they don’t touch. They lessen the effects of clenching or grinding and correct your bite by putting your teeth in a more correct position. What’s the difference between them? You wear night guards while you sleep. You use a splint all the time. Your dentist will tell you which type you need. •Dental work. Your dentist can replace missing teeth and use crowns, bridges, or braces to balance the biting surfaces of your teeth or to correct a bite problem. Other Treatments.
