5 Amazing Things You Didn?t Know A Banana Can Do!

MD - Consultant Physician
General Physician, Bhopal
5 Amazing Things You Didn?t Know A Banana Can Do!
Bananas are healthy and we all know that. However, other than the healthy benefits, there are some amazing uses of bananas that we think we never knew about.

Have a look at some of the most intriguing uses of bananas.

1. Skin moisturizing
Bananas have vitamin a, which is helpful in restoring the lost moisture of your skin. All you need to do is: mash a ripe banana and apply the paste on your skin. Adding honey to the paste would give you an even better skin. Just avoid getting this paste in your eyes.

2. Eye care
Yes, we mentioned that you should not let the paste in your eyes, but applying banana paste under your eyes for 20 minutes and washing it off with cold water would help you get rid of puffy eyes that we all hate. Don't we?

3. Feet care
Your heel is one tricky place to heal. Though we all use different creams to heal our heels but did you know that rubbing bananas over your heels and leaving it there for 10-15 minutes would help restore your heels to their former glory?

4. Hair care
If you want a natural conditioner for your hair and want to prevent hair loss, just mix some pulp of ripe bananas and yogurt. Apply this paste onto your scalp, let it sit on your hair for 15-20 minutes and rinse it off with cool water. This would help prevent hair loss.

5. Polish
A banana peel works as a great polish for your shoes and also for the silverware in your home. Rubbing the banana peel on your shoes and silverware and rubbing it off with a paper cloth would give you shining shoes and silver.

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. You should not be having a persistent neck pain as a health issue. If you have localized neck pain with no other symptoms like radiating upper limb pain, neurological symptoms like numbness, weakness, paresthesias etc, then you can start with following recommendations for initial period of 2-3 weeks: - to maintain proper posture of your neck while working and sleeping and observing principles of neck ergonomics especially while working - if pain is more then you can take a short course of an anti-inflammatory medication like tab etoshine or paracetamol or one which suits you - physical therapy initially under supervision of a trained physiotherapist and then to continue at home - adequate calcium & vitamin d intake if levels are low in body - ice packs can applied if your pain is acute, then hot fomentation can be done at home - analgesic spray for local application can be used and is easily available. We will observe you for next 2-3 weeks how you respond to this conservative management protocol. If you are not feeling better, then we will have to get some investigations like dynamic x rays of lower back and few blood tests for evaluation. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance.

HIV Infection: After you've been exposed to HIV / infected, it can take 2 weeks to 6 months for your body to start making HIVantibodies. This means that during this time you could have a negative HIV test, even though you have been infected and can spread the virus to others. This is commonly called the "window period, or seroconversion period. If the tests are negative for six months, it can be taken for granted that there is no infection.

I am suffering from diabetes kindly lat me know weather the accuchek shows the correct blood sugar and how many times we should test our blood in a day.

MBBS, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Mumbai
Accucheck or any other glucometer has approx 10-15% variation. Also for accucheck glucometer we use capillary blood (arterial blood which has more glucose) and for laboratory blood test we use venous blood (glucose utilized by muscles). So normally glucometer gives approx 15% more value than lab blood test. Frequency of checking blood sugar will depend upon control of diabetes. More uncontrolled diabetes = needs more frequent blood sugar monitoring.

PCOS - How It Can Be Diagnosed?

MBBS, D.G.O, Fellowship in Minimal Access Surgery, Membership of Royal College of Obstetrics & Gynaecology

PCOS - How It Can Be Diagnosed?

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a condition, which is born due to an imbalance of hormones within the female body. When this happens, the female body faces anumber of problems as far as her periods or menstrual cycles goes, besides finding it difficult to conceive naturally and easily. Let us find out more about this condition.

PCOS and hormones
To begin with, let us understand what hormones are. These are chemical impulses that send messages to various parts of the brain and rest of the body to signal the release of other kinds of hormones that may be vital for various functions. In PCOS, it is normally seen that the sex hormones are thrown out of balance, due to which the ovaries start producing a small dose of some male hormones. This creates problems as far as ovulation is concerned and also, it gives rise to the growth of facial hair, acne and changes in the overall appearance of the patient. Insulin resistance is another cause that may also trigger PCOS. It is also an inherited issue in many cases.

From irregular periods to an increase in acne and facial hair, there are many symptoms that may point at the existence of this condition. Fertility problems and issues related to normal ovulation are also often seen in women who are suffering from this condition due to the irregular periods. Additionally, depression may be seen in many patients who are suffering from this condition on a chronic basis. Thinning of hair and excess weight gain with difficulty in losing extra pounds may also be indicative of PCOS.

The diagnosis of PCOS is usually done with the help of a physical examination as well as a blood test that will primarily help in determining the sugar levels and insulin. The doctor will also conduct other hormone tests so as to understand which hormones are not in balance and which ones may be triggering changes in the body. Apart from all this, the doctor will also study the body mass index (BMI) of the patient to find out if there has been a sudden and drastic change on the weight of the patient. During the lab tests, where the blood and urine are examined, the doctor will also seek to rule out any anomalies in the thyroid gland. An ultrasound of the ovaries will also be conducted.

Weight loss programs as well as diet tweaks that remove excess dairy and meat may be recommended by the doctor. Further, the doctor may also put the patient on birth control pills so as to bring better balance of hormones. Moreover, moderate exercise will be required for the patient so that the normal production of hormones may be resumed eventually. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a gynaecologist.

In had an accident a year ago injuring my ankles ligament (rupture. It recovered within 21 days but soon I developed another rupture at the same place due to my fault. And now it's been an year of recovering and accident I still at times get pains in the same place.

Hello Lybrate user. Seems like you have developed ankle instability .first time when you had ankle sprained .u haven't done proper training or rehab of those muscle which are responsible to prevent or stop going ankle in that position which leads to lateral ankle sprain. I would suggest to apply ice packs, do taping in order to stable and heal injured ligaments .once the pain subsided do strengthening exercise to ankle muscle and then proprioception training .this will prevent future reoccurrence. If finds difficultly to understand above process. Visit physiotherapist near by you .or consult me online personally thanks.
