I am 20 years old. My left knee is always swollen with pain. Without taking tab I can't move so please suggest me what I should do.

MSc in Orhopedic Physiotherapy (UK), BPTh/BPT
Physiotherapist, Bangalore
Knee swelling is sometimes referred to as" water on the knee. The medical term for this condition is knee effusion. Effusion can result from an injury, chronic overuse, or disease. To treat your symptoms we need to identify the likely cause. The application of ice packs on your affected knee is known as a very effective home treatment method in alleviating the symptoms of fluid on the knee. Elevate your leg while applying an ice pack on the affected knee. Give yourself sufficient rest. You need to avoid engaging in strenuous activities. Please consult a physiotherapist to determine the cause of your joint swelling.

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. It is a very sensitive issue because it requires meticulous clinical examination by a doctor and then to correlate findings with mri investigation report. If there is a compression which is leading to a neurological deficit, then surgery is a good option in his case. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. You can also discuss your case and treatment plans with me in a greater detail in a private consultation.

My right leg knee meniscus & acl ligament tear. Should I go for surgery or there is anything other treatment for this like physiotherapy or knee strengthening exercises. Please suggest me a right thing. My age is 29years thank you.

MBBS, MS - Orthopaedics

It must be investigated. Get a MRI of the knee. You would probably need arthroscopic knee surgery. It is a very safe procedure in our hands with uniformly good results. Don?t ignore it lest it become beginning of a bigger problem

I am 25 year old male and have backache for last 1 months. I have used pain relief ointment cream for 2-3 days but haven.

MBBS, MD - Anaesthesiology, FIPM
Pain Management Specialist, Pune
Backpain at young age is due to muscle strain resulting from improper posture or disc degeneration. You can follow these simple tips to get relief. If problem persists you will have to consult. 1. Sit with straight back and change posture in between. 2. Take breaks in between work and walk. 3. Do back strengthening and stretching exercises daily. 4. Take simple painkillers like paracetamol if pain is persistent. 5. Apply analgesic cream over back followed by warm fomentation. 6.Keep pillow behind your knees at bedtime. 7. Do not bend and lift weights. 8. If back pain is accompanied with radiating leg pain or tingling , numbness or weakness, consult your doctor immediately

This could be due to lumbar spondylosis with nerve root compression. Rule out diabetes & vit. D deficiency or any other metabolic disorder. Sleep on a hard bed with soft bedding on it. Use no pillow under the head. Any way take paracetamol 250mg od & sos you will need other supportive medicines also. Do back (spine) exercises contact me again if need be. Make sure you are not allergic to any of the medicines you are going to take you may have to use lumbosacral support for some time. Avoid painful act/activities. I am 61 years and am obese weigh 100kg. And 5.7" Is it safe for me to have this surgery or is there some other way I can loose weight. I have suffered a minor stroke last year and a minor heart attack about 13 years back. I have 7 dislocations in my back! rest, I am fine!

Diploma in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, MBBS

Try loosing weight by diet, otherwise go for surgery, remember every surgery carries some risks. Doctors cannot recommend many exercises, you need to eat healthy with lots of seasonal fruits and vegetables, little fats, less carbs but more proteins like toned milk.
