Pcos: here is all that you must know about it!

Polycystic ovary syndrome (pcos) is a common hormonal disorder amongst women in their reproductive age. The symptoms of pcos being seemingly unrelated to each other, are often overlooked and remain undiagnosed. It is commonly termed as pcod (polycystic ovary disease) in which the there is an imbalance in the women’s hormones. As the name suggests, multiple cysts are formed in the ovaries that are pearl-sized (2-4mm), fluid filled and may contain immature eggs.

Whom does it most commonly affect?

Pcos most commonly affects women of reproductive age (14-45 years of age). In ceratin cases, pre-pubertal girls may also be affected by pcos.

What are the common symptoms of pcos?

Pcos, being a syndrome, is defined by a collection of signs and symptoms. The symptoms may vary from one individual to another. In case you observe two or more than two of these symptoms, make sure you undergo a thorough medical examination. Common symptoms are:

  1. Irregular scanty or missing menstrual periods
  2. Infertility such as ovulation dysfunction
  3. Excess or unwanted body or facial hair on the body
  4. Thinning hair on the scalp
  5. Weight problems, often leading to weight gain around the waist
  6. Skin problems such as skin bags, darkening of skin and acne

What causes pcos in women?

The exact cause of pcos is still not known, however, there are hypothesis suggesting a few of the common causes such as;

  1. Obesity
  2. High level of insulin
  3. Increased production of androgens
  4. Family history
  5. Environmental pollution and radiations

How can pcos be diagnosed?

Pcos symptoms affect more than 20% of the indian women and still remain undiagnosed at times. For an effective diagnosis, you may report of,

  1. Irregular periods in the past
  2. Tests revealing high levels of specific hormones
  3. Ultrasound showing polycystic pattern of the ovary

What are the possible complications of pcos?

Commonly reported complications of pcos include:

  1. Diabetes
  2. Heart and blood vessel problems
  3. Sleep apnea
  4. Uterine cancer
  5. Heart diseases

How can pcos be managed?

Once diagnosed, the treatment of pcos may differ from an individual to another. However, a few tips to manage/ prevent pcos are:

  1. Exercise regularly. Include activities such as aerobics, sports and brisk walk to your daily routine.
  2. Eat healthy. Include foods that are low in refined carbohydrates as it helps to regulate blood sugar levels. Also add foods rich in antioxidants, green vegetables super grain and fruits to your daily diet
  3. Avoid excess of junk foods, spicy and oily foods and sugary diets.
  4. In case you smoke, it is best recommended to quit smoking.
  5. Avoid stimulants. Beverages such as coffee, that act as a rich source of stimulating compounds, have been found to increase insulin production.
  6. Keep stress away. Combat this depression by engaging yourself in activities such as opting for bubble bath, watching an old favorite movie, reading a classic or meeting friends who could be good company.

The doctor may prescribe you will relevant medications to treat the complications, in case any.

Dear Patient, Weight gain and loss both are a simple mathematics of calories. Its impossible as to what you have said. Please see the calories in the diet. If you workout and stick to a low calorie diet plan- There has to be a weight loss. Portions also to be mentioned in the diet. You cannot eat unlimited and expect wt Loss. SO- Check the calories and portions of food in the diet and create a calorie deficit everyday. All the best.

Hello, Yes an anomaly scan and a targeted anomaly scan is being done at 18-20 weeks of gestation to find out such anomalies. But it is suggested that you both should get a genetic counselling done before planning another pregnancy.

Hi lybrate-user, you should get your level-2 scan done at 4&1/2 months of pregnancy i.e. When you are 18-20 weeks pregnant. This is a very detailed scan done to look for any gross congenital malformation in the baby. You will also start feeling baby movements at around the same time.

Hello, Was it normal delivery or a C. Section? Show her to her gynaecologist, narrate the details to her to know the exact cause as your wife got pain during menses after delivery. Here are some tips to help her get rid of your problem: 1. It is good to avoid fried, sour and protein rich foods in the last week of the menstrual cycle. 2. Eat fish as it contains omega-3 fatty acids, which helps in easing contractions during menstruation 3. Avoid eating dairy products, meat and poultry 4. Maintain healthy and nutritious diet and perform yoga to help you stay away from problems 5. If you are suffering from anemia, you should take food rich in iron 6. Avoid vegetables like potato, eggplant, yellow pumpkin and try to concentrate on consuming drumsticks, papaya, white pumpkin, snake guard, cucumber and bitter guard 7. When you experience pain, you can help reduce the pain by giving the area hot treatment. 8. Drinking plenty of water and herbal tea also helps reduce pain and problems faced during menstrual periods. You can also perform yoga and some cardiovascular exercises that will help you get rid of these cramps. Last but not the least; take as much rest as possible. This will help you keep your menstruation under control. Medication: Give her homoeopathic medicine - Schwabe’s Mag. Phos. 6x/ 5 tablets to be dissolved in ½ cup of water after every 2 hrly. I am suffering from problems of pimples and due tu pimples my face has damaged what should I do?

MBBS, MD - Dermatology , Venereology & Leprosy
Dermatologist, Mumbai
I am suffering from problems of pimples and due tu pimples my face has damaged what should I do?
Acne can be treated easily with facewash, tablets and creams. Some people have more oilyness on the face which results in breakouts. After completing treatment for controlling the active breakouts, tablets can be stopped and creams need to be continued to prevent recurrence. Diet and lifestyle modifications are also important. Please don't do any self treatment such as over the counter Steroid creams. Don't burst the pimples with your fingers as it can result in ugly scars. The marks left behind after the pimples heal can also be treated. Please call me or send your photos through online consult option for detailed prescription and diet advice.

Hi Shefali, delayed period could be due to stress or hormonal imbalance as she is known case of PCOD. If you had sex in fertile period in spite of protection pregnancy can occur in less than 5%

I AM IN FIRST TRIMESTER, IS IT OK TO EAT CHICKEN, CURRY, BRINJAL, WET ALMOND. IS THESE FOOD SAFE FOR BABY. When my first ultrasound be done. Its my second baby I conceive this 5 year after my first baby. My first baby is from c-section. Is it possible that I delivered this baby through normal delivery.

MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology, MBBS
Gynaecologist, Gurgaon
Hi lybrate-user. The food you mentioned are not only safe but actually good for the baby specially almonds and chicken. Usually first ultrasound should be done between 5-8 weeks of pregnancy. Whereas delivery is concerned at its been a gap of 5 years from your last delivery you can opt for normal delivery. Minimum is 3 years is recommended if you want a vaginal delivery. However there are risks involved in a vaginal birth after c section. I would personally not recommend to try for a vaginal birth.
