Fox Nuts (Makhana) - 12 Reasons Why You Should Eat Them!

Masters in Nutritional Therapy, Lifestyle & Weight Management, Sport Nutritions, graduation in Nutrition & Dietics
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Delhi
Fox Nuts (Makhana) - 12 Reasons Why You Should Eat Them!

When we think of a light evening snack, we often think of a packet of fried chips or Kurkure. However, it is time to think of something healthier, as we are already aware of the ill effects of these snacks all around us. This is where snacks like fox nuts are gaining popularity. Grown in the wetlands of Asian countries, they are also known as phool makhana (because of their flowery appearance) and lotus seeds.

They are a great snack and have multiple benefits. Read on to know about this wonderful, economical, tasty, and healthy dish.

  1. They are low in calories, fat, and sodium. They are therefore the perfect in-between-meal snack. They also make you feel full, so further cravings for binge eating are reduced
  2. Their low sodium and high potassium and magnesium content makes them very useful for people with high blood pressure
  3. The high calcium content is good for bone and teeth health
  4. Their sugar content is low, and so are highly useful for diabetics, who have the urge to eat at short intervals
  5. The fox nuts have astringent properties and are useful for kidney ailments
  6. People looking for weight loss should try makhana, as they are very low in calories but can fill the stomach. This helps control hunger pangs and intake of high-calorie foods
  7. It is rich in fiber and so can be used in weight loss as well as for digestion problems like constipation
  8. Fox nuts are rich in antioxidants and therefore useful in fighting ageing and chronic inflammation and stress in the body
  9. In both men and women, makhana is believed to improve fertility rates. The sperm quality and quantity is believed to improve when makhana is consumed
  10. Given its multiple benefits, especially calcium and iron, pregnant women are given makhana. It also helps prevent hypertension and diabetes in the pregnant mother
  11. Fox nuts are believed to help get rid of insomnia
  12. If addiction to coffee is your problem, try some fox nuts to get rid of the addiction

Methods of use:

  1. The seeds are actually tasteless and so whether it is salt or sweet, they take on the added taste
  2. Roast the seeds with a little ghee on a light flame. Sprinkle salt, and the yummy snack is good to go
  3. Other spices like cinnamon or oregano can be added to suit one’s taste
  4. They can also be used in sweet dishes like kheer and other desserts

If you are looking for a super snack that is highly healthy, economical, and has little hazards on your health, grab a bowl of fox nuts. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Dietitian/Nutritionist.

Actually my gf took 7 unwanted 72 in an year now she is suffering from vaginal pain during intercourse and white fluid discharge and blood comes out after intercourse and when she urinates she suffer a pain in bladder too and cant urinate properly. She is very afraid of ol dis. Please suggest me n guide me. Please.

dear , first of all its very dangerous to take 7 uw pills in a year..it could create havoc with her organs..u can instead use condoms for that purpose.. secondly pain during intercourse and white discharge are manifestations of PID(pelvic inflammatory diseases) i.e. severe infection in her reproductive organs. .difficulty while urinating is manifestation of urine infection.. Get her urine examined for any infection ..also get ultrasound abdomen done.. I would suggest to get her examined by a nearby gynecologist at the earliest to physically examine her first as treatment could be prescribed only after that and seeing the lab tests reports

Mam I was told by doctor that I have pcod what is it why did it happen and what is the cure ?

Dietitian/Nutritionist, Mumbai
polycystic ovary syndrome treatment generally focuses on management of your individual main concerns, such as infertility, hirsutism, acne or obesity. As a first step, I recommend weight loss through a low-calorie diet combined with moderate exercise activities. Low-fat, high-carbohydrate diets may increase insulin levels, so you may want to consider a low-carbohydrate diet if you have pcos as prescribed by a registered dietitian only. Don't severely restrict carbohydrates; instead, choose complex carbohydrates, which are high in fiber. The more fiber in a food, the more slowly it's digested and the more slowly your blood sugar levels rise. High-fiber carbohydrates include whole-grain breads and cereals, whole-wheat pasta, bulgur wheat, barley, brown rice, and beans. Limit less healthy, simple carbohydrates such as soda, excess fruit juice, cake, candy, ice cream, pies, cookies and doughnuts. Even a modest reduction in your weight for instance, losing 5 percent of your body weight might improve your condition I being a both a registered dietitian (rd) and doctor have been successfully helping patients with their problems through a holistic approach using customized therapeutic diet and medications. I will also suggest home remedies. Do reply back for private consultation for rx.

Many times the periods become irregular due to abuse of pills. Moreover, the sedentary lifestyle, mental stress and lack of exercise can become an extra burden on the overall health of the body ( including the harmonal system ). Please adapt a very healthy lifestyle and enjoy good health. At the same time be vigilant and go for or annual health checkup for the whole family to ensure good health.

Hello doctor, if period will not come after 7 weeks of D&C then what should I do next? Should I refer doctor now?
Your cycles do get disturbed after d&c sometimes but at the same time if you had unprotected sexual relations in between then it is better to check your urine for pregnancy test to confirm the status otherwise consult a gynecologist.

I am 27 years old unmarried girl. My weight is 45 kg. My period lasts only one day every month. What is the reason ?

M.B.S.(HOMEO), MD - Homeopathy
Homeopath, Visakhapatnam
Estrogen is an important hormone responsible for the changes that occur in the menstrual cycle. In adolescents estrogen levels may be starting to increase while in perimenopausal women its levels are starting to decline. Any fluctuations in estrogen levels during any stage of life can also affect the regularity of your periods. One possible cause of short periods in women of child-bearing age is the use of oral or injected contraceptives which may affect estrogen levels. Another contraceptive, the intrauterine device (iud), which is implanted in the uterus, can cause vaginal bleeding that resembles a short period. Other factors may be also involved in short menstrual periods. These include rigorous exercise training among athletes, mental, physical or emotional stress, eating disorders and weight loss, which may affect estrogen levels, causing changes in your periods. Better you use pulsatill 200 three doses.

I have an ovarian cyst of 20 cm. Can I wait another 5 months for surgery if it does not hurt.
As the cyst is very large you should get it removed sooner rather than later as the ovarian function can be further compromised.

Microdissectomy

M.Ch, MBBS
Neurosurgeon, Bikaner
Microdissectomy

Microdiscectomy
In a microdiscectomy a small portion of the bone over the nerve root and any loose disc fragments from under the nerve root are removed to relieve neural impingement and to provide more room for the nerve to heal. This procedure typically requires a small incision of only one to two inches and is performed using a microscope and microsurgical techniques. Since the incision is quite small, the incidence of damage to surrounding tissues is quite rare.

The desired outcome of this surgery is to relieve symptoms such as leg and/or back pain, weakness, and numbness in the legs and feet. Patients will often feel relief almost immediately after the surgery.

A microdiscectomy may be performed in different regions of the spine, cervical, thoracic and lumbar.

In most cases, this surgery is performed on an outpatient basis and the patient will start walking few hours after the surgery.
