Your weight is controlled by 4 major factors (1) refined sugar consumption (2) exercise and hydration (3) posture and sitting (4) how many times do you indulge yourself - alcohol, binge eating at parties, overeating etc. Step 01: refined sugar 1. Avoid all snacks and commercial products with sugar in them - biscuits, cakes, bournvita, horlicks, coke, pepsi, energy drinks, sweetened yogurt etc. 2. Cut down on your daily intake of tea/coffee and maintain it at 3-4 cups a day. 3. Try to add little sugar to any beverage (coffee, tea, milk, lemon water etc.) that you have and ideally you should refrain from adding any sugar altogether. Step 02: get exercise and proper hydration 1. Try to work out for 20 minutes each day. You do not necessarily have to go to the gym. You can incorporate some pretty powerful exercises in your daily routine like - squats, skipping, surya namaskar and core exercises. 2. Drink 8-10 glasses of water everyday but remember that tea/coffee are not substitutes for pure water. Step 03: improve posture and sitting habits if you have a sitting job then ensure that you do not sit for more than 30 minutes at one stretch. Get up and move a little after every 30 minutes. Step 04: stop indulging and eat more of raw natural stuff 1. No more than 60 ml of hard liqour or 2 glasses of beer per day. 2. Try to eliminate the urge to overeat but if you do overeat try to limit the incidents to two times per week. 3. Eat 4 servings of fruits per day. 4. Each of your meal should contain 50% of raw vegetables. Once you incorporate the above points in your routine you will see a dramatic difference in your weight, physical shape and energy levels. You will find that there are a lot of companies out there that are trying to sell expensive products to naive consumers in the name of weight loss. These products may not necessarily be good for you. Losing and maintaining weight is something which is totally in your hands, it is easy and it is free of cost if you follow the above mentioned points.

MY wife is a depression patient. For the last 27 years I have been suffering because she is always quarelling with me even for silly matters and cursing my brothers & sister even though they are not coming to my house. However she is very beligerent during the visit of her sisters & brothers. Of late she is highly in agitated mood and because of this I am unable to concentrate my job and often thinks why should I live in this world. She has been taking psychiatric drugs for the last 27 years. And I am at regular intervals taking her to a psychiatric doctor for treatment. Please advise me what I have to do in this respect

Hypnotherapist, DCS, BSIC, Advanced Trainee of Transactional Analysis, Advanced Skills in Counselling
Psychologist,
Drugs only reduce or remove the symptoms but the underlying cause remains. Counselling will help her to get her to manage her anger and talking more sense fully. Yet I also see that you do indulge in quarrelling with her. Both of you need to see a marriage counsellor who will help you both to put forward what you actually expect from each other and who you really are and what you can realistically do in the marriage and what you cannot/ don' t want to do in the marriage. Often married couples have expectations of each other which the other person is not even aware of. In marriage 2 people bring together their individual personalities which has evolved over the years through personal experiences, values, attitudes, culture. Beliefs and judgements which can be often very different from each others. A happy marriage stands on the pillars of mutual respect, trust and open communication. It also needs a lot of self awareness and" other" awareness to work too. Compromise, adjustments, sacrifices are some other aspects that a marriage needs for it to succeed.

Chap Stick (Lip Balm) - How to Choose the Right One?

MBBS, Diploma In Dermatology And Venerology And Leprosy (DDVL)
Dermatologist, Gurgaon
Chap Stick (Lip Balm) - How to Choose the Right One?

If people were asked, as to what would be the one important cosmetic without which they would not step out, it has to be the lip balm. From a time when it was mainly used during winters to avoid chapped lips to the present days when it has become an essential cosmetic product irrespective of the weather or the season, it has come a long way.

While there are still the plain ones which have petroleum jelly and help in keeping the lips moist, there are also the new flavoured and coloured options. They have also found their way into the cash counters where these attractive picks make most people impulse buyers. There are also specialised lip balms aimed at men, which are customised keeping in mind the slightly rough skin.

The lip balm has many ingredients, but the main component is waxy and could be beeswax, carnauba wax, paraffin, lanolin, or camphor. There are many organic products available which contain essential oils, shea butter, silk protein, nut oils like almond oil and cocoa butter. The main purpose is to create a protective layer on the surface of the lips to protect it from cold, dry air, and reduce damage from sun exposure. It also seals the moisture that is inherently present in the lips, thereby preventing chapping and cracking of the lips. Some cheaper products could contain hemp oils, petroleum and mineral oils.

When picking a lip balm, consider the following:

  1. Purpose: Do you want something protective or do you want something attractive? The answer to this question will decide the product you pick. If protection is the main reason, then something plain will do. If you want colours and flavours, the pick would be different. There are specialised products for men, so go indulge.
  2. Exposure to the sun: There are some lip balms which offer protection with a good SPF, so if you are likely to be out in the sun for long period, use this.
  3. Medicated: Some lip balms also contain medicinal effects against cold sores, so if you have a cold sore, use this.
  4. Do no harm: There could be lip balms which contain synthetic substances like phenol, menthol, salicylic acid, and alum. These have a tendency to dry the lips, and so not advisable in the long run.
  5. Container: While lip balm sticks are very popular, they are best for single person use, to avoid contamination.

Whatever the product you apply, it inevitably enters your system and so it is important to take a good product. Choose plant-based essences which are not just healthy but also provide a good, protective effect for the lips. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a dermatologist.

Hello Abhishek, It might be possible that you are suffering from tendonitis that is a swelling in the tendons which join the bones or which joins the muscle to the bones. Sudden jerk, lifting heavy weight or excessive twisting of the hand can cause such swelling. The best solution for this can be to give absolute rest to your arm for a week. If that is not possible, you can take medicines

I am 16 years old. I have a problem of hair fall. I tried many shampoos but no use. Please suggest some remedy to get rid of it.

I am 16 years old. I have a problem of hair fall. I tried many shampoos but no use. Please suggest some remedy to get...
Hi. Let me tell you about hairfall. In layman's language, hairfall can be divided into 2 types - temporary hairfall and permanent (which is called as 'Hairloss' rather). In temporary hairfall, hair grows back again from the same hair root, but in case of permanent hairloss, may be because of formation of DHT (Di- Hydro -Testosterone) around hair root it gets choked up, subsequently affects the blood supply to the hair and thus hair root is lost forever. (There are different pattern and types of hairloss, because of different reasons like Alopecia Areata, Telogen Effluvium, Scarring Alopecia, Traction Alopecia, etc.) Causes of hairloss: Many factors are responsible formation of this DHT or male/ female pattern baldness - hereditary, post-illness/ ailment, post-delivery, post- chemotherapy, nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalance, insufficient sleep, sudden loss of weight, stress/ tensions/ excessive anger, use of bore water, any other underlying diseases, etc. Need to rule out any causative factor or underlying medical condition. Management: Take diet rich in protein like non-veg., eggs (it's loaded with essential nutrients such as proteins, Vitamin B12, iron, zinc and Omega 6 fatty acids in large amounts and biotin) , different pulses & legumes, sprouts, nuts (sp. walnuts and almonds); iron-rich food like green vegetables, carrots, prunes, green peas; also oats, shrimp, take flaxseeds, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, green tea, soyabean, fruits, salads, etc. Take low-fat dairy products (they also contain whey and casein, two high-quality protein sources) Take proper 6-9hrs of sound sleep. Give up the habit of smoking and excessive alcohol intake. Avoid junk food and any kind of beverages (tea, coffee, aerated drinks, cold drinks, etc.) Avoid canned/ tinned food or food that contains preservatives (eat fresh ones). Avoid use of hard water to wash the head rather use boiled water for head wash. Avoid use of harsh hair colour, hair treatment like rebonding, straightening, perming, etc. Avoid vigorous exercises or any supplements provided by the gym! Use Rose wood/ any wooden hair comb to brush your hair. Regular exercising is also one of the important point, but should be done under some good, qualified yoga teacher or instructor for proper guidance; it also releases the stress/ tension in the mind and the body and keeps you FIT and YOUNG!! Medication: Take homoeopathic Rx - Schwabe's Wiesbaden 200 & Alfalfa Tonic twice a day for 1 month and revert. Also, use Schwabe's Arnica shampoo and Hair Growth oil regularly as per the condition of your scalp (minimum 3 times a week). After shampooing, use Bakson's Arnica Hair conditioner as well after every head wash. Apart from this, take Follihair tablets (multivitamin) - 1 tab. daily once for 1 month. Investigations advised: Get your blood tested for (empty stomach) - CBC, S. Iron, S. Folic acid, S. Ferritin, S. Calcium, S. Vitamin D3, S. Vitamin B12. If there is any family history of Thyroid dysfunction, get Thyroid function test done as well.

Vaginal Piercing - What the Possible Risks Involved?

MICOG, MS, MBBS
Gynaecologist, Delhi
Vaginal Piercing - What the Possible Risks Involved?

Piercing is a form of body ornamentation. It involves the use of needles to pierce through the skin and attach a piece of jewellery to the skin. The purpose of piercing is to beautify and in case of genital piercing, it comes with the additional perks of sexual stimulation. However, this completely depends on individual preference. In the female genital anatomy, several parts are suitable for piercing. This includes the clitoral hood, the labia and the vulva vestibule.

How piercing should be done?
1. The skin around the area where the piercing is to be done must be cleaned with antiseptic.
2. A topical anaesthetic may be applied to temporarily numb the area to be pierced. This helps to control pain.
3. Any piercing must be carried out by a licensed, well-practised professional.
4. Piercing must be done with the use of new, unused, sterilized needles, which are easily disposable.
5. After-care must be provided immediately after the piercing. This includes the application of medicated healing creams, or an ice pack that relieves the pain of piercing. Typically a piercing should heal completely by the sixth week.

Risks associated with vaginal piercing
1. Wrong technique of piercing can lead to uncontrollable bleeding and wounds.
2. Poor placement of jewellery can cause the piercing to heal very slowly and painfully.
3. Poor sterilization of needles and unhygienic methods can cause severe skin infections and other complications.
4. Tearing of skin or sagging of the clitoral hood, or labia can occur due to the improper weight of the jewellery placed.
5. Spread of genital disease may occur if the piercer does not use gloves or antiseptic during the procedure.

Never opt for a piercing just because your friends are getting it done. A healthy method of getting pierced involves an understanding of your anatomy, skin type, tolerance of certain kinds of metal on your skin and extremely hygienic conditions. It sure is fashionable and may appeal to people with a different sense of aesthetics, but you must never ignore the risks. Do a thorough background check of the piercer you would like to visit and the possible after care products that you can use. It would also help to quickly get a check up done by a doctor before going ahead with the piercing. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

Does using minoxidil for growing beard has any side effects And if I start using it Should I want to use it completely throughout Does it causes any side effects like increased heart beat etc And what is the cost of it generally.

Does using minoxidil for growing beard has any side effects And if I start using it Should I want to use it completel...
Minoxidil is generally well tolerated, but common side effects include burning or irritation of the eye, itching, redness or irritation at the treated area, as well as unwanted hair growth elsewhere on the body. Exacerbation of hair loss/alopecia has been reported. Severe allergic reactions may include rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue, chest pain, dizziness, fainting, tachycardia, sudden and unexplained weight gain, or swelling of the hands and feet. Temporary hair loss is a common side effect of minoxidil treatment. Alcohol and propylene glycol present in some topical preparations may dry the scalp, resulting in dandruff and contact dermatitis.[13] some formulations of minoxidil substitute lipid nanosomes in order to reduce contact dermatitis from the alcohol and propylene glycol vehicle. Side effects of oral minoxidil may include swelling of the face and extremities, rapid and irregular heartbeat, lightheadedness, cardiac lesions, and focal necrosis of the papillary muscle and subendocardial areas of the left ventricle.[10] there have been cases of allergic reactions to minoxidil or the non-active ingredient propylene glycol, which is found in some topical minoxidil formulations. Pseudoacromegaly is an extremely rare side effect reported with large doses of oral minoxidil. Please consult nearby physician before taking this medicine.

Mr K D, If you are referring to hypothyroidism, then she has to be treated with thyroxine tablets. Dose will depend on TSH levels and body weight. Plus should exercise regularly for 1 hour a day so as to maintain near normal weight. After starting the treatment periodically tsh levels should be checked in 6 to 8 weeks to see if any change in dosage is needed.

I am 28 year old suffering with back bone pain, I am not able to work what should I do.

MSc in Orhopedic Physiotherapy (UK), BPTh/BPT
Physiotherapist, Bangalore
I am 28 year old suffering with back bone pain, I am not able to work what should I do.
Here are some tips for how to handle your back pain: -stop normal physical activity for the first few days. This will help relieve your symptoms and reduce any swelling in the area of the pain. -apply heat or ice to the painful area. One good method is to use ice for the first 48 to 72 hours, and then use heat. Take pain relievers medicine. --while sleeping, try lying in a curled-up, fetal position with a pillow between your legs. If you usually sleep on your back, place a pillow or rolled towel under your knees to relieve pressure. -do not perform activities that involve heavy lifting or twisting of your back for the first 6 weeks after the pain begins. -avoid bending forward and sitting in a place for long time -stretching and strengthening exercises are important. But, starting these exercises too soon after an injury can make your pain worse. -some physiotherapy treatment like ift current can give you some relief. -a full history of your problem should be taken and your movements assessed by a physiotherapist. Please consult a physiotherapist for the same.

How can I practice to run and what is food can I eaten, and when I go to run please give me some information.
The best diet for anyone who is pursuing cardiovascular activities is one which comprises more amount of protein and less carbohydrates and fats. Consume all types of protein from both veg and non veg sources throughout the day. Try to consume least amount of simple carbohydrates which mainly comes from sweet and processed foods. Complex carbohydrates like brown rice, brown bread and oats are good. And avoid any types of fats during the day. Extra virgin olive oil is an exception but that should be consumed during the day time only.

I am 49 year old man. I have been suffering from gall bladder stone. Please advice how can I remove it with out surgery.

Basic Life Support (B.L.S), Doctor of Medicine
General Physician,
Gall bladder stone is a surgical condition. But severity depends on type size and location of stones. Ercp or removal of gall bladder are few options. And don't worry removal of gb does not cause major life style problems post surgery. So if your doctor has adviced it go for it. Far most it'll atleast take away the pain the stones must be causing you. And prevent the complication of involving your pancreas if not treated early.

Dear lybrate user, backache after sitting for longer period suggestive of wither of 2 problem. 1- disc herniation which is more likely & 2- facetal arthritis which is less likely. Kindly get mri of lumbosacral spine done & consult a interventional pain specialist or orthopedician trained in spine. I'm sure your diagnosis will be confirmed as diagnosing back pain is not easy due to different small anatomical structure, hence advise will be to visit any of the above mentioned specialist. Once diagnosis is made it can be tested, else you'll keep on taking pain killers to suppress pain but disease can't be treated this way. Hope this will guide you better.
