Severe Headache - Can it Be Migraine?

MBBS, MD - Internal Medicine
Internal Medicine Specialist, Faridabad
Severe Headache - Can it Be Migraine?

One of the most debilitating conditions that anyone can experience is migraine. They can severely limit you by affecting your personal and professional life as you are in constant pain. Migraine can manifest in a type of headache with intense pain, an acute sensitivity to light, vomiting and nausea. Often described as a severe throbbing pain in the head, it may stop you from completing regular daily tasks and may delay or postpone your work.

How can migraines be treated?
The exact cause for these debilitating migraine pain hasn't been pointed out yet, but certain triggers such as stress, hormonal changes in the menstrual cycle, sun exposure, bright or flashing lights, among many others have been identified. The first line of defense for you would be to understand and identify what your triggers are. Once that is done, you can try and avoid them. If these still trigger a migraine or are about to trigger one, you can immediately take medications or steps to control it or at least lessen the pain to go through your day. Some of the options you can employ to this effect are mentioned below.

  1. Medications to prevent a migraine attack: The medications mentioned here are specialized treatments and can only be taken after a consultation with a doctor. If you are deemed as a candidate for preventative medication for migraines, then either one or a combination of drugs from the following may be prescribed to you.
    • Valproate and Topiramate are anti-seizure medications which can be used to prevent migraines.
    • Propranolol, a type of beta blocker and used for cardio vascular problems, has proven to be very effective in preventing migraines.
    • Onabotulinumtoxin A or a type of Botox, has shown a lot of promise in preventing migraines and is being slowly rolled out as a proper drug as a treatment option.
    • Certain antidepressants have also shown to be quite effective in reducing the symptoms of migraines as well.
  2. Medications to relieve pain: Some of the go to medications that help relieve your pain from migraine are mentioned below. Although some of them are OTC (over the counter) drugs, it is best advised that you consult with your doctor for medications which suit you better. The side effects of these medications can be bad and thus, it is not advised to continue them in the long run and to find other means to control pain from migraines. Some of the medications to relieve pain temporarily are:
    • Triptan is a drug used to treat severe migraines
    • Caffeine along with Ergotamine can also help dull the pain and deal with it.
    • Ibuprofen and aspirin and Acetaminophen are common pain killers that you can use
    • Codeine, which contains opioids are also used to treat this problem.
    • Metoclopramide and chlorpromazine are two examples of anti-nausea medications as vomiting along with nausea may frequently accompany your migraine.

Always remember that these medications can have strong side effects if not taken properly, therefore do not just pop a pill, consult your physician first and know which one should you take and how frequently.

My son is 19 years old having epilepsy since 4 years with medicines levepsy 500 * 3 and velprin chrono 500 * 3 daily still he is having seizures.what can be done

AUTLS, CCEDM, MD - Internal Medicine, MBBS
General Physician, Faridabad
first of all ensure that he is taking them daily..it is highly unlikely that on regular medications with two antiepileptics , one still develop seizures..even one missed dose can be bothersome...what was his EEG reports and CT scan reports (u must have got them done)as there are various infective causes of seizures which are treatable with specific medications.. tablet phenobarbitone has good results where both these above medications fail...but it has to be prescribed by your consulting doctor as its not OTC drug...

Scope of Homoeopathic in treating Epilepsy

BHMS, MD - Homeopathy
Homeopath, Chennai
Epilepsy is a disorder that results from the generation of electrical signals inside the brain, causing recurring seizures. Seizure symptoms vary. Some people with epilepsy simply stare blankly for a few seconds during a seizure, while others have regular convulsions.

A seizure is a abnormal, disorderly discharging of the brain's nerve cells, resulting in a temporary disturbance of motor, sensory, or mental function. There are many types of seizures, depending primarily on the part of the brain involved.

Every person suffering from epilepsy has different experience. Hence homoeopathy offers many remedies to treat epilepsy, depending on the sign and symptoms. Homoeopathy can treat epilepsy very successfully.

Risk Factors
Early childhood
Above 65 years
Men are affected more
Family History of epilepsy
Fall on head, injury, accident
Brain Infections

Causes
Healthy people may have seizures under certain circumstances. If the seizures have a known cause, the condition is referred to as secondary or symptomatic epilepsy. Some of the more common causes include the following:
Tumour
Chemical imbalance such as low blood sugar or sodium
Head injuries
Certain toxic chemicals or drugs of abuse
Alcohol withdrawal
Stroke including hemorrhage
Birth injuries
Developmental Disorders: Epilepsy can be associated with other developmental disorders, such as autism and Down syndrome.

Symptoms
Almost any type of behavior that happens repetitively may represent a seizure. Types are:

Generalized seizures: All areas of the brain (cortex) are involved in a generalized seizure. Sometimes these are referred to as grand mal seizures.
To the observer, the person experiencing such a seizure may cry out or make some sound, stiffen for some seconds, then have rhythmic movements of the arms and legs. Often the rhythmic movements slow before stopping.
Eyes are generally open.
The person may not appear to be breathing. The person is often breathing deeply after an episode.
The return to consciousness is gradual and should occur within a few moments.
Loss of urine is common.
Often people will be confused briefly after a generalized seizure.

Partial or focal seizures: Only part of the brain is involved, so only part of the body is affected. Depending on the part of the brain having abnormal electrical activity, symptoms may vary.
If the part of the brain controlling movement of the hand is involved, for example, then perhaps only the hand may show rhythmic movements or jerking.
If other areas of the brain are involved, symptoms might include strange sensations or small repetitive movements such as picking at clothes or lip smacking.
Sometimes the person with a partial seizure appears dazed or confused. This may represent a partial complex seizure. The term complex is used by doctors to describe a person who is between being fully alert and unconscious.

Absence or Petit mal seizures: These are most common in childhood. Symptoms include
Impairment of consciousness is present with the person often staring blankly.
Repetitive blinking or other small movements may be present.
Typically, these seizures are brief, lasting only seconds. Some people may have many of these in a day.
Other types of seizure are particularly found in small children

Investigations
Neurological Examination
Blood Tests
EEG
MRI Scan
CT Scan

Diagnosis
The doctor uses neurological tests and other investigations to diagnose epilepsy.

Complications
Falling: If you fall during a seizure, you can have severe head injury.
Status Epilepticus: This condition occurs if you're in a state of continuous seizure activity lasting more than five minutes or you have frequent recurrent seizures without regaining consciousness in between them. People with status epilepticus have an increased risk of permanent brain damage and death.

Role of Homeopathy
Homeopathy is a form of healing based upon the principle of ‘Similia similibus curentur’ or ‘like cures like’. It was founded by a German doctor, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann in 1810. Homoeopathy offers vast scope in the treatment of various illnesses, both acute and chronic including epilepsy.

Homeopathy takes into account the entire person like the patients family history, past history, etc. Homoeopathic doctors study each case thoroughly, analyze and evaluate the symptoms and then prescribe the medicine.

Homeopaths treat the patient’s mental, emotional and physical make-up i.e. the constitution. This is known as ’constitutional treatment’. Constitutional treatment treats the disease and removes it from its roots. The Constitutional method is employed in the treatment of epilepsy in Homoeopathy. This method is gives amazing results in many cases.

Homeopathy has immense scope in the treatment of Epilepsy. In fresh cases, where the child is new to epileptic treatment, homoeopathy can relieve complaints by giving ‘constitutional treatment’.

In other cases where the child is already taking treatment, homoeopathy can taper off the doses gradually and thus treat the patient effectively. Thus, in both the cases, homoeopathic treatment is beneficial in treating epilepsy.

In either of the cases, a constitutional medicine is given to treat epilepsy. Constitutional treatment relieves the patient from seizures, convulsions, etc. Thus the child can attend school daily and concentrate on his studies. In about 1/3 cases of epilepsy, a surgery known as ‘seizure surgery’ is performed. Regular constitutional treatment is very useful in such cases.

Homeopathic medicines are completely side-effect free and are not habit-forming. They can be taken by children, adults and even by pregnant women. They must be taken only after consultation from a homoeopathic practitioner.

Our team at Newlife Speciality Centre is completely dedicated to serve the patients and relieve them from illnesses. The doctors have skill and knowledge to handle different cases effectively. They strive for the well being of their clients.

My son faces some learning difficulties, lack of concentration & minute dyslexia as per our observation since last 2-3 yrs. He is 6 yrs old & will be going to class 1 in dwarka, Delhi, Need guidance & suggestions for ensuring that my son get over this issue as earliest as possible.

Masters in counseling psychology, Counseling psychologist, Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapist
Psychologist, Mumbai
Firstly i would like to request you to not diagnose your son on your own observations, as it needs to be done only by a professional. There is no form of minute dyslexia. Either he has it or not. He can be a slow learner or just have difficulty with learning and concentration, not necessarily a learning disorder. So do not have assumptions as it can be anything else. Kindly take him to a professional psychologist and a pediatrician who will do a complete physiological and psychological evaluation. If he has any learning disorder it will be diagnosed. After that there are many training centers for children with learning difficulties or disorders. He can be trained properly and taught different learning techniques. Please take proper guidance from professionals as proper diagnoses will save you and your son from a lot of trouble.
