Hot Vs. Cold: What Is The Best Treatment For A Back Injury?

Back injury is not a common problem. It happens to some of us at some point of time. It can be painful and make your life worse. Most of us suffering from this pain opt for several methods to get rid of the unbearable pain. We leave no stone unturned to get the best possible way of getting rid of the pain. Of all these methods, two are very common and are thought to be the best possible home-based remedies—hot and cold compression.

While some will tell you to take a hot bath, others will insist on a cold compress. You might be confused about the benefits of these two separate treatments. Stop scratching your head to decide what to opt in to relieve your back pain. Know about the benefits of each treatment first and why and when they are used.

Ice Is Used for Injuries-

It is a common experience for most of us when we develop an injury during our regular exercising. The injury might lead to swelling of the muscle and mild to intense pain. The swelling is the cause behind the pain. Ice is not capable of curing your entire problem or helps you in fracture or bone repair. But what it can do is that it lowers the inflammation of the affected tissues. It is the best treatment for people who want to avoid medicine. It is more helpful in cases of muscle sprain or ligament or cartilage tear.

There are different ways of applying the ice on the injury. Some people prefer using an ice pack while others may just use a bag of frozen peas. You can even wrap pieces of ice with a towel and then apply it over the affected area.

It has to be kept in mind that when you are using the ice pack for pain relief, don’t apply it for more than 20 minutes. It is also to be kept in mind that doesn’t use ice for injuries in case you have issues with circulation. This might worsen the condition further. It needs to be understood that application of huge amounts of ice can lead to further tissue damage. So, you need to have control over yourself. Don’t get tempted by the fact that ice eases the pain due to inflammation. Cut your coat according to your need.

Heat Is Used for Muscles and Stress-

Heat is a wonderful remedy for treating those with bad back pain. It triggers certain points on the body. People who suffer from any back injury will admit that they have been benefited by hot bath or hot compression. It also provides relief to the nerves and nervous system. It helps you to be free from stress.

What If You Take Up The Wrong Treatment?

If you commit mistakes while choosing the right treatment, you won’t die. But, there can be ramifications if the wrong treatment has opted for.

It might be improper hygiene. If none of you don't have same infection so can't contracted. It can be confirmed only by laboratory investigation. But it's better to take precautions further. It might be fungal infection so anti fungal help you. If at all clear doubt go for test by both of you.

Never tense for knee joint pain take 2 gm turmeric powder with hot milk 200ml and 1/4 tsf deshi ghee mix all these drink at bedtime. Find better result in pain and stiffness, do mild excercise and walking apply any oil over the joints.

Back ache can be due to several reasons. It can be muscular, related to disc degeneration or prolapse, joint irritation or nerve pinching. Most common is muscle pain due to tight and weak back and abdominal muscles. Keep a positive attitude, focus more on keeping good posture especially when sitting for long hours, use lumbar support. Take frequent breaks and stretch in between. Try changing sleeping habits. Try hot or cold therapy as tolerated. Wish you speedy recovery.

I have an operation on my ankle to remove one my wire & two screws from my ankle. Twenty days gone. I felt some pain. Ian using aceclofenac with paracetamol for five days, two each day. I am relived from pain. If I get pain again can I use the medicine for another five days? swelling is also there.

Hi for pain and swelling take cold water fomentation for 20 minutes thrice a day for 5 days. Keep ankle elevated. Do stretching and gentle massage of hand. If still you don't get relief and need further advice, consult me via lybrate.

Hi It may be due to nerve compression at lumber. Keep pillow under knee while sleeping on back. Learn spine mobility and strengthening exercise from Physio. Do reply for private consultation and detailed treatment plan .

For leg pain, please follow the below advise: keep your leg raised while sitting or lying quadriceps strengthening exercises- quad clenches: lie flat on your back or sit upright on a chair with leg kept horizontally on another surface. Now, tighten the muscle on the front of the thigh by pushing your knee down. You should feel your thigh muscles clench, hold for 3 secs. Repeat 10 times twice a day. Short arcs: lie flat on your back or sit upright with your leg placed horizontally on a flat surface like a chair or bed. Place a rolled up towel under the knee. Pull your toes towards you and clench you thigh muscles. Slowly lift your foot up off the bed until your knee is straight (keep your knee resting on the towel). Hold for 3 secs and slowly lower them on the chair. Repeat 10 times twice a day. Straight leg raise: lie flat on your back. One leg and knee will be straight and other leg should be bent. Pull your toes towards you and tighten/clench the muscle on the front of the thigh, locking your knee straight. Lift your foot up in the air, about 6 inches off the bed. Hold for 3 secs and slowly lower the leg. The knee must remain straight the whole time you are doing this exercise.

Hello Lybrate user according to Ayurveda Vata vikriti is the main factor for pain. Treatment- 1-apply prasarini oil or pranacharya restopain oil on your affected part and give hot water fomentation. 2-take yograj guggul and agni tundi vati after lunch and dinner with warm water. 3-Take maha rasnadi kwath 2-2 tsf twice a day. 4-Take pranacharya vatari capsule and syrup twice a day. Diet- Avoid fermented food. Junk food. Potato rice. Sleep well.

You may have immune deficiency but your harmonic imbalances as well as metabol ism also taking a greater part in your life. Better advice is to follow regular routines of getting all yoga and exercise with proper dietary measures and practice meditation twice daily then you feel better result. You continue it for six months regular and hot water sipping boiled with ginger and tulasi leaves every half-hour. If you trust me then continue it and I assure you for your complete cure without any medicine.

My mother has disk problem. Unke 4 manke back k hile hue he then wt should we do . She had a lot of pain in spinal cord due to disk problem even she cannot bent or cant do work .So please give me some suggestions what should we do please?

Start using support brace as soon as possible. Bending and lifting heavy weights is not at all advisable. She should go for regular traction to relieve stress off her disk. Ample rest and back extension exercises are required.

Must ensure she is passing normal motion or flattus (farting) at least. If yes then look for fever, pain in abdomen at a particular point. If yes, then get back to your surgeon or family physician for a thorough examination clinically for the cause of vomiting. Do not waste time as she may lose electrolytes over the time and may become dehydrated.

Hi I have a problem in my right shoulder. The pain is persistiall along. I find difficulty in lifting my hand above the shoulder level. A sharp pain in the joint of my arm and shoulder. I cannot sleep on my right side cause of the pain.

Hi thanks for your query. Shoulder pain at this age can be due to shoulder pathology or can come from degenerative discs in neck. You also have a restricted shoulder movement, can be due to adhesive capsulitis or frozen shoulder, degenerative rotator cuff etc. My advice, start intensive physical therapy in presence of a physiotherapist and see if there is any improvement, if not then we will have to look at getting some investigations done for you. 6 months ago while learning two wheeler, I fell from the scooter, however no injuries. From then on the hip joint I get pain, specially when I sit long time in the same posture. One orthopedic doctor advised me to take an injection on that spot. Is this advisable, pls suggest.

Do consult neuro physio and take ift and laser therapy for 12 days foliwed by strengthening exercise once if it fails you can try other remedies.
