Dear lybrate-user, you have not clarified about your periods. If you are having regular periods, you are safe and an occassional nausea could be because of acidity.

Treating Diabetes With A Proper Diet

M.Sc - Dietitics / Nutrition
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Delhi
Play video

I am Deepika Kohli. I am a femle nutritionist working with British Biologicals.I started my career with All India institute of Medical Sciences in a W.H.O. project. After that, I was working with chief dietician in Jeevan Anmol Hospital. Then with Faiser as diabetes educator. Then with Ebbot as a nutrition adviser. Presently I am dealing with all therapeutic diets like diabetic diets at LifeCare and Jeevan Anmol hospital as well.
Today, I will be talking about diabetes.
What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder in which a person is not able to utilise glucose completely. It’s of 2 types. Type-1 diabetes and Type-2 diabetes.

Type-1 diabetes totally insulin dependent.

Type- 2 diabetes which is found in middle-aged and elderly persons, it is non-insulin dependent.

What are the causes of diabetes?

Causes can be genetic and be due to sedentary lifestyle, due to some increased weight (obesity). So, this can be managed through diets, drugs, education and exercise.
I’ll be telling you dietary management of diabetes. A person who is diabetic should restrict their calories. If a patient is overweight, then I suggest them 20 kcal/kg body weight. It’s these calories they have to take. And if the patient is underweight, then 40 kcal/kg body weight calories. And if the person is of ideal body weight, then 25 kcal/kg body weight is the calorie requirement for that patient. And protein should be 15- 20% of total calories. 25-30 gm of total calories should come from fat. But the fibre is very very important for a diabetic patient. Like fibre is a thing which gives satiety feeling to the patient’s diet and along with that, it passes undigested from the small intestine to large intestine. Because a diabetic patient will feel very hungry during the day, so if we are giving small small amounts of salad, vegetables or thick vegetable soup along with fibre, so the patient will feel satiety and not feel hungry.

For consultation with me, you can fix an appointment with Lybrate, online and offline as well.

What care should be taken to my wife suffering from Atopic Dermatitis through out her body which causes more itching and water like fluid comes out from affected parts. Please advise.

What care should be taken to my wife suffering from Atopic Dermatitis through out her body which causes more itching ...
Moisturize your skin at least twice a day. Use a moisturizer all over while your skin is still damp from a bath or shower. Pay special attention to your legs, arms, back and the sides of your body. If your skin is already dry, consider using oil or lubricating cream. Avoid scratching. Cover the itchy area if you can't keep from scratching it. Trim nails and wear gloves at night. Apply cool, wet compresses. Covering the affected area with bandages and dressings helps protect the skin and prevent scratching. Take a warm bath. Sprinkle the bath water with baking soda, uncooked oatmeal or colloidal oatmeal — a finely ground oatmeal that is made for the bathtub (Aveeno, others). Soak for 10 to 15 minutes, then pat dry and apply medicated lotions, moisturizers or both (use the medicated form first). Choose mild soaps without dyes or perfumes. Be sure to rinse the soap completely off your body. Use a humidifier. Hot, dry indoor air can parch sensitive skin and worsen itching and flaking. A portable home humidifier or one attached to your furnace adds moisture to the air inside your home. Keep your humidifier clean to prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi. Wear cool, smooth-textured cotton clothing. Reduce irritation by avoiding clothing that's rough, tight, scratchy or made from wool. Also, wear appropriate clothing in hot weather or during exercise to prevent excessive sweating.
