Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. Actually pain at calf/leg region can be due to many reasons, commonly it is muscular in nature but it can also be due to tendons, nerves, blood vessels etc. My advise to you for initial 2-3 weeks will be: - ice packs application intensively with elevation of your limbs at night - take a short course of anti-inflammatory medication as per your body's suitability - stop your physical activity till pain completely subsides - intensive physical therapy, training and proper muscle conditioning once pain has subsided - slow resumption of physical activities with proper pre activity warm up and stretching of muscles and short increments in duration of physical activity each day as per pain tolerance. - we will get some blood tests for you - serum vitamin d and serum potassium levels, esr and crp once you have all these reports then you can contact me as I can advise you for proper supplementation do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. Thanks & regards Dr. Akshay kumar saxena consultant orthopaedics fortis hospital, new delhi.

I have knee pain from osteoarthritis. Am I allowed to walk?

This is the question most elderly patients from all walks of life ask me, be it a learned advocate or the local farmer.

Guess the answer? it is a big yes!

Knee osteoarthritis is the wear and tear that happens in the knee joint. At times we fail to understand that our knees also age along with us! so they may not be in a situation to behave the save way they behaved 20 years back, when you used cycle or trot a few miles to your school or college or the way you were comfortable squatting or kneeling whether it is fit sanitary purposes or religious causes

The fact is the knees have to be tamed well and should not be battered the same way as it was a few decades back!

Now coming to our original discussion, yes, you are allowed to walk!

But how do you do it when you are already suffering from pain?

You could rest your knees for a few days - usually a week, if you have severe pain. Your doctor could help you with some low dose pain killer tablets and ointments. On top of it all, the single best way to reduce your knee pain is lifestyle modifications!

What's the lifestyle modification we are talking about?

1) no climbing up or down stairs!

2) no sitting on and getting up from the floor!

3) no kneeling! and

4) a big no to squatting in the toilet!

Doctor, you must be kidding! how am I supposed to live without these?

Restrict the number of times you climb stairs.

Use a chair/sofa to sit! at unavoidable situations, use a stable support to sit on the floor and then to get up! do not place too much stress on your knees when you get up from the floor!

Absolutely no kneeling! for religious prayers, use a shall flat stool to sit and offer your prayers, but do not kneel!

Use a western (raised) toilet commode for sanitation! if you can't afford to change your present indian ones, use a wooden/plastic raised seat with a central opening temporarily until you can arrange a permanent raised one!

Should I spend time walking or not?

Yes you should!

Walking helps to rebuild the joint!

Walking strengthens the thigh and leg muscles!

Walking helps you lose weight!

Walking keeps your body active and prevents lethargy!

Last but not the least!

Walking pacifies the mind and prevents psychological problems!

So what are you waiting for?
Get out your shoes and burn your calories!

Cerebral palsy is a non progressive disease which causes motor delays along with other symptoms which like low iq, disorder with sensory system etc. Till now there is no cure for the disease but with physiotherapy and occupational therapy a child can learn normal movement patterns which his brain might not know on its own and be able to perform it with practice. Its a gradual process and therapy would continue for a long time. Please start with the therapy as soon as possible.

How can I deal with back pain. Do you have any medicine of that one.
Hi back pain usually occurs due to prolonged sitting in a bad posture hence the pressure on the back increases and you get back pain as your muscle don't support any undue pressure so for this now you can start with a hot packs for ten minutes twice a day and also start strengthening your core muscles.

How to manage gout ?

Dip. SICOT (Belgium), MNAMS, DNB (Orthopedics), MBBS
Orthopedist,
Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. Gout is a condition in which uric acid crystals deposit in joints and cause a lot of inflammatory pain. There are ways to keep your uric acid value in body to low levels. General recommendations are: - decreasing intake of red meat, alcohol, rice in your diet and other purine rich sources - also increase your water intake so that uric acid is excreted from body well. - keeping your weight to normal levels will also help you. - intake of fresh fruits, citrus fruits and cherries has been implicated in reducing uric acid values in the body as well. Nowadays there is a medication by the name of febuxostat which helps in lowering uric acid levels in body but kindly check out that it suits your body. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. Thanks & regards

Medial planter nerve passes near the fascia and it may also get affected, night sharp, shooting, burning pain in the planter aspect of foot indicates nerve involvement.
