10 Most Common Headache Triggers

10 Most Common Headache Triggers

10 Most Common Headache Triggers

It's not just loud music or a tight deadline or even an impending visit from your mother-in-law. With so much going on, it can be hard to avoid headaches, but there are a few common (and unexpected) things you can learn to avoid to prevent pain in the future.

10 / Anxiety

Stress can take a toll on you. Breathe, relax and take a stroll.

9 / Glare

Brightness from your computer screen, sunlight or overhead lights can make things painful. Turn it down and try adding a desk lamp.

8 / Noise

It's not just loud, repetitive sounds. Even lower level on continuous noise can hurt. Calming music and headphones may help.

7 / Eating + Sleeping Patterns

Eat when you're hungry. Sleep enough (not too much or too little), and don't sleep in an odd position in a cold room - it can make your muscles spasm.

6 / Medication

Some prescription medications may have the potential to trigger a headache. If you notice an increase, talk to your doctor.

5 / Physical Activity

Take it easy in the gym. Pushing too hard can result in an exertional headache from the swelling of blood vessels in your head, neck, and scalp.

4 / Lack of Physical Activity

Even though over-exertion can increase your risk for headaches, staying sedentary doesn't help either. As with most things in life, moderation is key. Talk to your doctor before beginning or revising any exercise regimen.

3 / Posture

Your mom was right! Sit up straight to keep blood flowing (and move around when you can if you spend extended periods of time bent over a desk).

2 / Hormones

When estrogen levels drop (especially right before your period), you may be more likely to get a headache. Keep track of your cycle and plan when you can.

1 / Food Sensitivities

Food and drink release neurotransmitters, which can cause headaches in some people. Triggers include aspartame, caffeine, chocolate, alcohol, cheese and more.

'So what should I do?'
Well, everybody is different. But knowing what works for you (and what doesn't) can help you avoid headaches in the future. Listen to your body. It's smarter than you think! Experiment and see what works for you.

My gf period usually starts by 13 till 20 in a month. If we have sex without protective method or condom from 16 till 28, will she be pregnant? Please tell me the answer with full explanation. Thanks.

MD - GENERAL PHYSICIAN
Integrated Medicine Specialist, Bangalore
Hi, to answer your question, the female ovulation can happen as early as from 8th day of menses (count from the 1st day of periods) usually, so if intercourse is performed unprotected it can certainly lead to pregnancy if she ovulates on the 8th day. It can also happen before the 8th day so you can check her status by using a urine pregnancy test. Urine pregnancy tests come positive only after 5-6 weeks of conception hence wait for her next time of periods and then test. You can use physical barriers as a means of simple contraception. Take care.

Follow these simple steps to ensure a good sleep every night and stay away from sleep disorders and other health problems associated with unhealthy sleep habits: 1) maintain a regular sleep routine go to bed at the same time. Wake up at the same time. Ideally, your schedule will remain the same (+/- 20 minutes) every night of the week. A good sleep hygiene routine promotes healthy sleep and daytime alertness. 2) avoid sleeping during the daytime. It can disturb the normal pattern. 3) avoid caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol near bedtime. While alcohol may speed the onset of sleep, it creates problems in he second half of sleep. 4) exercise can promote good sleep. Exercise should be taken in the morning or late afternoon. Yoga, can be done before bed to help. 5) have a quiet, comfortable bedroom. Set your bedroom thermostat at a comfortable temperature. Generally, a little cooler is better than a little warmer. Turn off the tv and other extraneous noise that may disrupt sleep. Background'white noise' like a fan is ok. If your pets awaken you, keep them outside the bedroom. Your bedroom should be dark. Turn off bright lights. Have a comfortable mattress. 6) avoid heavy meals close to bedtime. 7) ensure adequate exposure to natural light. 8) avoid emotionally upsetting conversations and activities before trying to go to sleep. Do not think of, or bring your problems to bed. 9) stop using all your digital devices and stop looking at digital screens be it mobile phones or televisions at least 1 hour before the time you plan to sleep. Instead try reading a fiction book near bedtime so it makes you help relaxed and de-stressed. Sleep well live healthy and live longer.

Orthopedist,
Hi thanks for your query. There are various causes of swelling and it is difficult to point out an orthopaedic cause for it especially if there is no injury, it is advisable to get an opinion from a general physician, some blood tests may help find out a cause. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. Thanks & regards Dr Akshay Kumar Saxena
