Gestational Diabetes - How It Can Be Treated?

Gestational Diabetes - How It Can Be Treated?

Women tend to develop high levels of blood sugar during their pregnancy (especially within the 24th and 28th weeks), irrespective of whether they already had suffered from diabetes prior to their pregnancy. However, gestational diabetes, if not taken proper care of, might escalate the risks of developing diabetes in the near future for both the mother and the child, accompanied by complications in pregnancy or labor. Gestational diabetes is usually characterized by mild symptoms such as excessive urge to urinate, excessive thirst, blurred vision and fatigue.

Causes:
Insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, allows for the utilization of the glucose for energy. The food consumed is broken down by the digestive tract of the body, converting carbohydrates into glucose before releasing it into the bloodstream. The glucose is then absorbed by the cells to be used as an energy source. Now, at the time of pregnancy, the placenta (organ nourishing the fetus) connecting the baby to the blood supply also produces various other hormones in high levels, for instance, estrogen and human placental lactogen. Most of these hinder the normal functioning of insulin in the cells, hence raising the blood sugar count. With subsequent growth of the baby, the placenta keeps on producing more amounts of such insulin resistant hormones to an extent that they are capable of meddling with the development of the baby.

Treatment:
1. Monitoring the blood sugar count at least four to five times a day and keeping it under control might help to ease the complication.
2. A healthy diet consisting of whole grains, vegetables and fruits in the right proportion and limiting sugar or other highly refined carbs meets the nutrition and fiber requirement of the body. Guard against additional weight gain during pregnancy as that hampers the entire process.
3. Exercise or regular physical activities help to normalize blood sugar level by boosting glucose absorption in the cells. Furthermore, exercises also enhance the sensitivity of the cells towards insulin. This means that only a little amount of insulin production by your body would be enough for the transportation of sugar.
4. Medication, If exercise and diet fall inadequate, insulin injections are often administered to control blood sugar count.
5. Keeping the baby under close observation with the help of repeated ultrasound and other tests to record its growth and development is an essential part of the treatment plan. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a gynaecologist.

Giving regular food a twist

Mommas dilemma. How to keep the food healthy and interesting for their children. Kids throw a fit when they are served something they dislike.

You could always have an alternative for'unhealthy' food, and create a healthier and nutrition-rich meal.

Try turning the boring roti and sabzi into a vegetable wrap with loads of salad leaves, tomatoes and onions for the crunchiness.

Cheese and butter are a child's weaknesses. So, how do we make it healthy? for children, any dish with a top-up of cheese is too good to resist. But, you could use paneer instead or if they just can't do without it, try the cheese made from cow's milk.

It's all about giving the regular food a twist, making it look interesting and giving your old recipes a new look. Just a few changes here and there, and you have a healthy version of fast food. So gear up all moms create something healthy n interesting.

Moms are the best cooks after all!

For the health of your baby you have to breast feed till 4 months at least. If you must give formula give it with a spoon and not bottle. Each time you mix 30 Ml to which you add one level spoon of powder.

Hi if baby doesn't poo for even a week it's normal but if baby is having any problem like vomiting, decrease milk intake, pain or straining while passing motion then you need to consult a doc.

I want to know related to child growth and if growth is stunted at the age of fifteen. whom should I consult?

DNB (Pediatrics), Diploma in Child Health (DCH), MBBS
Pediatrician, Delhi
At the age of 15 yrs as per your information if correct this girl is a case of short stature because 137.2 cm for this girl falls below 3 sd for the age and sex. You have noticed late so without wasting time you should consult any pediatric endocrinologist as early as possible. As wt is also less so there can be some systemic illness which is not obvious but chronic.

Myth - Breast feeding spoils the Mother's figure

MS - Obstetrics and Gynaecology, MBBS
Gynaecologist, Agra
Not at all! Breasts sag from obesity and lax muscle tone - not because of nursing a baby. To the contrary, the baby's sucking leads to the uterus contracting, which helps restore the belly to its normal position quite quickly. What you really need is a well fitting bra to give you support, with nursing flaps to allow your baby easy access to your breasts.

TO MANAGE CHILD STUBBORNNESS
Many patents call a child stubborn if he does not obey instantly. He may be engrossed in a game which he does not want to leave. A child's stubbornness or refusal to cooperate may stem from too many orders, too many demands and the attitude. ' I have said so, and you shall do it. A little laxity will help a lot and the child will cooperate mist of the time if he is not disciplined too much.

I suppose he has fever for last 3 days and taking paracetamol 125 mg. Since he is not having any other symptoms, fever may be due to viral fever which takes about 4-7 days to go. Give paracetamol 125 mg 6-8 hourly and maintain hydration. If viral is not suspected, consult pediatrician.
