Hi when we have hypo thyrodism can we have spinach in our diet? As it is rich in protein?
Lybrate-user, spinach is not very rich in protein, a small cup of spinach gives about 1 g of protein. Raw vegetables contain fiber, vitamins (b complex, vit c etc) and some protein and fat. Water content is very high. In hypothyroidism it can be consumed. Thanks.

If you are not a diabetic but overweight reduce the weight. If your weight is normal for height then maintain it. Exercise regularly specially aerobic like walking swimming cycling etc. Fenofibrate is better choice for hypertrigyceridemia.

Hi librate user, nice to hear from you, to avoid getting diabetes you should keep a watch on your diet, exercise and body weight. If you don't have diabetes in your family, if you are eating healthy food and doing regular exercise and maintaining your weight, there are very little chances you will get diabetes. Regular exercise should include cycling/ swimming/ brisk walking / jogging / any other outdoor sports activity for at least 30-40 minutes per day, 6 days per week. Thank you.

Hyperthyroidism - 3 Type of Foods You Must Avoid!

Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)

Hyperthyroidism - 3 Type of Foods You Must Avoid!

Hyperthyroidism causes the thyroid gland to produce excess hormones, which accelerates the metabolism, in turn affecting the heart, bone health, and mood. The symptoms of hyperthyroidism include increased heartbeat, insomnia, anxiety, heightened hunger, and weight loss, all of which can be controlled via medicines and a healthy diet plan.

However, there are certain foods that can worsen the condition and lead to the severity of the symptoms. These should be avoided at all costs by anyone suffering from hyperthyroidism.

- Caffeinated drinks

Caffeinated drinks can worsen hyperthyroidism symptoms by aggravating palpitations, anxiety and insomnia. These include energy drinks, coffee, black tea, alcohol, soda. It is advisable to replace these drinks with healthy herbal tea or lemon water, which are apt refreshments with multiple health benefits.

- Foods with high glycemic content

Processed refined grains lose their nutrients like vitamin B and become not only useless but harmful to the body. The high glycemic content in refined grains can cause fluctuations in your blood sugar level, which can trigger terrible mood swings. It is advised to swap these with whole grains, quinoa, oatmeal and wild rice.

- Trans fat and hydrogenated oil

Trans- fat and partially hydrogenated oil are the culprits of heart diseases. To ensure the health of your heart and reduce the chances of hyperthyroidism, it is important to minimize the consumption of all the foods that list hydrogenated oil in their ingredient list. These are cookies, margarine, cakes, donuts, French fries, crackers and many others. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an ayurveda.

Hello. My father is 50 years old he is suffering from diabetics he is having 427 so what food we give and how can we control.

Is he on treatment for diabetes? if so what are the drugs? it appears his present treatment is not adequate. I suggest to shift on basal insulin like injection basalog to begin with 6 units once in the morning, do sugar checkup at home daily and if not at desired level increase insulin by 2 units every alternate day. Preferably with guidance from your doctor. About the food first check his daily caloric need based on ideal body weigh in kgs x 25 calories per day. Ideal body weight is height in centimeters - 100x 0.9 he has to eat only that much per day and walk 1 h every day. Avoid direct sweets, deep fried foods, excess salt and fruits like mango, chikkoos, grapes & banana.

Mr if blood glucose levels are maintained with in normal limit like fasting closer to 100 mg, pp 150 to 160 mg & hba1c% <7, kidney function improves and hence creatinine level also can reverse to normal. Plus protein intake also may have to be restricted to about 0.6 g / kg per day. Thanks.
