Diet in Pregnancy

MS - Obstetrics and Gynaecology, MBBS
Gynaecologist, Gurgaon
Diet in Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a very special time in a woman's life when there is an added focus to take care of yourself and your unborn child. The adage 'you are what you eat' takes on a whole new meaning during this period as it becomes the soon to be mother's responsibility to pack in extra nutrition to nourish her growing bump. Doctors often add in a dose of vitamins to ensure that the both mother and child are well nourished. But beyond that, the food choices you make will maintain a healthy weight gain for you and your baby and eventually even help when you want to shed the extra weight after your child is born.

Here are some tips to have a perfect diet during your pregnancy

  1. Load up on the good stuff: Even if you've always been eating healthy, it is time to crank things up a notch and include more proteins, vitamins, minerals especially folic acid and iron and some extra calories for energy and increase it as you progress in your pregnancy. But eating to get more nutrients doesn't have to mean eating more in general. If you are already at a healthy weight, then you don't need extra calories in the first trimester. In the second trimester, you need about 340 extra calories a day and about 450 extra calories a day in the third trimester. The numbers will change if you are underweight or overweight.
  2. Say no to some: During pregnancy, give a skip to food items like raw seafood and undercooked meat and poultry. This could lead to potentially dangerous infections. Other foods to steer clear from include unpasteurized milk and soft cheese. All of these are possible sources of bacteria that can be harmful to an unborn child. It is always good to give your fruits and veggies a good extra wash, as always. Try to avoid the known culprits like popular local fruits that may be laden with artificial ripeners. Also avoid food with excess oil or preservatives. You will also have to say a complete no to alcohol or smoking during this period. While most sites suggest that you also ditch your caffeine fix, you can best keep it less than 200 mg or 12 ounces in a day. Stick to decaffeinated tea and sodas when possible. Some other foods that have to be avoided during pregnancy are packaged food, cold drinks, preserved food items as they contain preservatives, which are harmful. Also, chinese food should be avoided as it contains monosodium glutamate, which is again harmful due to teratogenic chemical.
  3. Diet a big no: Another big no during pregnancy is dieting or controlling the intake of food to lose weight. Pregnancy is the time you actually, for once, get to legally gain weight and be happy about. Don't mess up your natural system with forced diets.
  4. Keep the food coming: Pregnancy is the time for food craving at all odd hours and the time to give into them without an ounce of guilt! If you are dealing with nausea and food aversion, try to stick to small meals throughout the day. Replace the chips with carrot sticks and the pizza slice with soup. If that sweet tooth starts acting up, give it a frozen fruit dessert or shake.

My father has a very big issue in sugar. He follows every thing but he can't get over it.
For diabetes follow a diet low in carbohydrate, low in fat and high in fibre. Avoid bakery products. Avoid too much rice and potato. Avoid fried stuff. Avoid chocolate, cakes, ice cream, soft drinks and fruit juices. Eat lots of vegetables. Walk for at least 30 minutes a day for 5 days in a week. Medicine and insulin will work better if you follow diet and exercise. Medication will depend upon blood sugar level.

Hi, I am atul, 41 ys old. I got tested for vit -d, which is found to be low, 14.9 ng/ml. I got it tested 2 years back also when it was found to be around 32, but still doctor advised me vit D3 capsules of 60000 iu once per week for 4-5 months. I took it but vit D didn't increase much and went to 35. In between my medicine was also reduced to 2000 iu and also stopped in between for some time. Now I was taking it 1000 iu per day from last 2-3 months but still after taking medicine, it came too low today, 15 only. Report attached. So, I am surprised why it is not increasing when I have taken medicines also. I also have history of hypothyroidism and high lipids from last 10 years. I take 62.5 mcg Thyronorm daily and 5 mg rosulip from last 3 months. Lipids are in control now. Please suggest what I should do and whi h medicine to take to elevate vit D levels. I was told to take combination of vit D3 along with Vit K2. Please suggest. Thanks a lot. Atul.

Hi, I am atul, 41 ys old. I got tested for vit -d, which is found to be low, 14.9 ng/ml. I got it tested 2 years back...
Hello Sir, Ibis a little unclear when you had the last Vitamin D levels checked. Vitamin D is synthesized in the skin when the skin is exposed to sunlight. Vitamin D is present in the food in very small quantities. So the only way you could get a reasonable level of Vitamin D levels in your body is by exposing your body- that is the upper part of your body including arms and legs to sunlight for at least 45 min every day. As it is nearly summer season now, you can sit in the sun at around 9-10 am every day for about 45 min. Alternatively you can continue taking 1000 IU of vitamin D tablet every day. Your lipid levels would be abnormal if you have hypothyroidism, once he thyroid hormone levels are in normal range, the lipid levels will reduce too. You could even stop the Rosulip but check your lipid levels once a year. Hope this helps you Thank you.

Sir mouth ulcer problem is very common for me please tell me the solution of this problem it is 2 year old problem.

MBBS, cc USG
General Physician, Gurgaon
Hello, Follow advises given below 1.Gently rub a small ice cube over the spot or rinse your mouth with ice-cold water 2.You can also chew on a clove bud (lavang) and direct the juice generated to the area where the ulcer is located 3.To prevent infection, rinse your mouth 4.Honey helps retain moisture and prevent dehydration. It also helps reduce scarring and hastens the process of new tissue growth Dab a little honey onto the mouth ulcer or mix in a little turmeric to make a paste that can be applied on the affected area. 5. Tulsi: Chew a few leaves of tulsi along with some water about three to four times every day. This will help in getting rid of ulcers faster 6.Dry coconut, coconut oil and coconut water are three products of the coconut tree that are very useful in treating mouth ulcers. Drinking tender coconut water helps to cool the body. Applying a little coconut oil directly onto the mouth ulcer or chewing some coconut (fresh or dry) helps reduce pain 7. you could apply a little ghee directly to the ulcerated area, or drink a glass of buttermilk two or three times every day. Consult Physician for further management as you are having this problem for long

This can be taenia nigra, a type of fungal infection. . Let us consider the treatment of a fungal infection in the groin region i. e. around genitals. First thing what you need to do is, keep the area clean. Then see to it that the region is always dry because Wet and moist environment provides nice place for fungus to breed. Change the underwear daily. Old underwears to be thrown, please buy new ones. Stop smoking, tobbacco chewing, alcohol etc. habbits if present. Maintain good diet without sweet for a few days in non diabetics, diabetics need blood sugar level control. Medicines can be prescribed if not getting cured by these simple measures. Regards.

I have got excessive sweating on my feet and it stinks. This started happening recently after I started wearing the floaters which I ordered online. Is it something related to the quality of slippers? Or due to some body conditions? Please help me! Answer: It is due to stress and stimulation of para sympathetic nervous system I got above response for my question. I am not sure what" stimulation of para sympathetic nervous system" means. Can anyone help to understand what's wrong happening with nervous system and how can I overcome the situation.

MBBS, MD - Community Medicine

Most probably bad base layer of floaters or shoes which remains in contact with your foot. Change shoes/ floater. Use good quality cotton socks like Metro, Nike, Jockey etc whichever you feel affordable for you. Washing feet two times in day as well change shocks daily.

Take homoeopathic medicine - schwabe's damiaplant/ thrice daily for 4 weeks. Management: regular exercising keeps you fit and healthy, so don't forget to do it. Practice pranayam regularly for half an hour preferably in a garden early in the morning. Not to do these exercises within 4 hours after meals. One can have meals not within 15 minutes after finishing these exercises. These exercises are good for gaining and maintaining good health. Also, practice pelvic floor exercise or kegel exercise, consists of repeatedly contracting and relaxing the muscles that form part of the pelvic floor. It makes the muscles of pelvis toned and strengthened! in order to locate your pelvic muscles try to stop and begin the flow of urine as using the bathroom. You can perform kegel exercises with the empty bladder as exercising pelvic muscle with the full bladder might result in urinary tract infections.
