I got a small tooth cavity over my second premolar. Its paining since morning when I brushed with cold water. Since I am having exams I can not do any procedures right now. Please help me. Is it fine to take ibuprofen/diclofenac if its paining for two weeks. Is it good to do warm saline mouth gargle for this. Please reply.

MDS - Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
Dentist, Chennai
You can take a painkiller if it is very severe pain. But its not advisable to do that for more than 2 or 3 days. Warm saline will help to a certain extent in reducing infection. But it may not help with pain. Please visit a dentist. He will just prescribe antibiotics and painkiller for three days and then you can start the treatment after exams as soon as possible. It is safer to use the drugs prescribes by the dentist and will also be effective reducing pain and infection temporarily.

Visit a dentist to determine the exact cause of your mouth smell. It may be diet, acidity or food getting stuck between your gums and teeth. Treatment will be accordingly.

Since the tooth has been fractured, you need to get it checked by dentist to restore it or extract it. Any delay could result in severe infection.

When I wake up in the morning my mouth is very dry,may i request to inform me reason & remedy,( Age 72 years).

Hi Sir Dry mouth can be caused as a side effect of many medicines or other infections. Also during night time since the mouth is closed there is even less secretion of saliva hence causing dry mouth. Remedy is that you try to sip water & other liquids at short intervals. Also maintain proper brushing esp before going to bed is important. You can also chew sugarless gums to increase the flow of saliva.

Don't rush when you brush. for best results, brush your teeth for atleast 2 to 3 minutes.

Dear lybrate-user, the swelling in your tooth is due to accumulation of infectious material (pus). Most likely, it will require a root canal treatment. The peice of bone, as told to you by your doctor seems unlikely.

. Me arohi n i'm 18 years old. In my teeth I have a problems related gums. N smell. Which mouthwash can I take. For it? Which mouthwash you recommend me.?

BDS, CDE Endo-Prostho, CDE - Cast Partial & Complete Dentures
Dentist, Pune
Hello, mouthwash is like a perfume. You will feel healthy and fresh for a limited period of time. You can use any good brand mouthwash available in market. Bad smell from mouth could be because of deposits or food lodgement between teeth. Visit a dentist and get your scaling and polishing done. Brush twice daily, floss regularly. You can avoid it by rinsing after every 1-2 hours.

Pain in deep ears. Especially when I eat. Its more when I press my teeth together.

MDS - Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
Dentist, Chennai
Kindly consult an oral & maxillofacial surgeon in person for further suggestion. We need more investigations (full mouth x-ray, tmj open & closed mouth) & clinical examination to decide upon treatment. Until then have soft diet. Replace posterior teeth if they are missing. Advise mouth opening exercise & side to side movement for the jaw muscles or the use of anti-inflammatory medicines and painkillers. For people who grind their teeth or clench their jaw, a bite-appliance may be made which corrects the way in which the jaw works and reduces the stresses and loads on it. This can be disposed of when normal function is restored. As oral & maxillo-facial surgeon, may be required to perform surgery on the tmj.

My teeth isn't growing now. It has stopped growing in between. I have only half teeth now what should I do?

BDS
Dentist, Mumbai
Hi, Going by your description it seems you mean that entire teeth are not seen in mouth and only half of the teeth are seen. It may be a condition where your teeth hv fully erupted but are partly covered by excessive gums giving the impression that your teeth are not completely erupted. You may require crown lengthening procedure. It is a cosmetic procedure with excellent result potential. Pardon me if I hv misunderstood your question. If any other doubts feel free to consult using your free consultation. Send pics of your teeth if possible.

I am 18 years old and I was suffering from teeth ache for last two months and I take medicine but it does not relief me what I have to do to got relief from the pain.

MDS - Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
Dentist, Chennai
The type of treatment you have for toothache /sensitivity/swelling will depend on the cause of the pain, so your dentist will examine your mouth and may carry out an X-ray to try to identify the problem. •If your toothache / sensitivity/swelling is caused by tooth decay, your dentist will remove the decayed area and replace it with a filling. •If your toothache / sensitivity/swelling is caused by a loose or broken filling, the filling will be taken out, any decay will be removed and a new filling put in place. •If the pulp inside your tooth is infected, you may need root canal treatment. This procedure involves removing the infected pulp and then inserting a special type of filling to seal the tooth and prevent re-infection. •If your toothache / sensitivity/swelling can't be treated using these methods, or if your tooth is impacted (wedged between another tooth and your jaw), it may need to be removed.

You may need fixed / removable braces or surgical correction (functional or cosmetic). Requirements may depends on the age, complaint, duration of the treatment & affordability. Cost of cosmetic dentistry (braces or surgical correction) varies with dentist. Dental tips: - visit a dentist every six months for cleaning and a thorough dental check-up. Limit sugary food to avoid tooth decay. Gargle your mouth thoroughly after every meal. Scrub gently to clean your tongue with a tongue cleaner. Floss all your teeth inter dentally & brush twice daily, morning & night, up & down short vertical strokes, with ultra-soft bristles, indicator brush. Tooth brush to be changed every 2 months.
